WINS FOR SEAGULLS AND LAMPETER

Ceredigion and North Pembs rugby round up

Division 1 West.
Llangennech 33 Aberystwyth 28

Aberystwyth fell to their third defeat of the season when they were beaten by four tries to one but they picked up a hard earned bonus point for their efforts.

The Ceredigion side were forced to make a number of changes in selection due to injuries, and further casualties during the game caused even more disruption and had it not been for the accurate boot of Llyr Thomas who contributed 23 points, it could have been much worse.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring when flanker Paul Stubbs burst through the line and he. fed Arwel Lloyd who when tackled, off loaded to skipper Lee ‘Truck’ Evans to score under the posts. Thomas added the conversion before the hosts hit back when inside half Tom Neale crossed for a try converted by fly-half Josh Hammett.

Thomas and Hammet exchanged two penalties apiece before the home side took the lead for the first time with a try wide out from full-back Tom Barnes who followed up a clever grubber kick. Thomas though had the final word of the half with another three pointer to put his team ahead at the break by a single point.

Thomas added another penalty early in the second half to extend Aber’s lead to 15-19 but Llangennech responded with a second try wide out from full-back Barnes, converted by Hammett before another Thomas penalty for the visitors levelled the scores at 22-22.

Lee Evans

The home side regained the lead with a second try from scrum half Neale before Thomas and Hammett exchanged penalty kicks once again to take the score to 30-25 and set up an exciting last ten.

The accurate boot of Hammett put Llangennech further ahead at 33-25 but the visitors managed to snatch a losing bonus point late on when Thomas completed his afternoons work with another penalty.

Division 2
Amman United 13 Fishguard & Goodwick 36

Two tries from Seagulls centre Mike Jenkins and some accurate kicking from fly half Jake Jenkins helped steer Fishguard through for an important win against lower table rivals.

Jenkins who came in from Crymych RFC as their game was rained off helped spark a back line that caused the hosts plenty of problems throughout.

It was Amman though who were first out of the blocks and they took a ten point lead with a try from winger Shane Edwards and penalty and conversion from Joel Foster. However the visitors hit back with a try from centre Arwel Davies which was converted by Jenkins before the latter kicked his team into the lead after the break with a second three pointer.

A second try from centre Davies and two from his midfield partner Jenkins put their side well ahead before front rower Ryan McVeigh sealed the result with a late try to push the seagulls further up the table.

Yr Hendy 38 Llanybydder 6

There was no let up for bottom of the table side Llanybydder as they were heavily beaten away at division leaders Hendy by 38-6 and they face another difficult challenge as next up for them is an away trip to second placed Pontarddulais.

Division 3 west B
Trimsaran 12 Lampeter 38

Division high fliers Lampeter returned with a well deserved bonus point win despite being without a number of regulars.

The visitors came flying out of the blocks and took an early lead when scrum half Carwyn Lewis scampered over and his try was converted by fly half Arwel Thomas.

Straight from the restart, Lampeter moved the ball wide and after a period of sustained pressure, the Trimsaran defence was eventually opened up for skipper Daryl Davies to gallop in under the posts. Thomas again converted to give his team a healthy lead.

Another try soon followed as the visitors dominated possession up front and right wing Gareth Griffiths finished off some impressing play between forwards and backs to sprint in for a third try. Thomas again converted to extend the Lampeter lead to 21 points.

Trimsaran hit back with a try from wing Lee Bates before stand off Thomas completed the scoring for the half with a penalty to put his team well in front at 24-5

Flanker Ceri Thomas claimed the all important bonus point try on the hour which was converted by his brother Arwel and another try followed late on when second row Guto Jones barged his way over for a try that was once again converted by Thomas.

It was Trimsaran though who had the final say when Lee Bates intercepted the ball from deep in his own half and ran in to claim a late consolation try for Trimsaran which was converted by Ben Bridgewater.

Division 3 west A
Tregaron 7 Milford Haven 20

Title chasers Milford were forced to work hard before they overcame the challenge of a plucky Tregaron outfit on a very heavy strip.

The Mariners who look one of the favourites for the title along with Pembroke went ahead early with tries from experienced campaigner Lee Riley and hard working forward Dai Sweeney before scrum half Gwion Jones reduced the deficit with a try.

However a further try and penalty from full back Riley put the game to bed.
