COBRA V BULLS

Crymych 2nds will make an historic journey into deepest mid Wales tomorrow for a third round tie in the WRU Bowl.

The Bulls, who have taken some notable scalps already, are one of the few minnow teams left in the competition along with Penallta 2nds and Nant Conwy 2nds but they will be quietly confident of carrying out another giant killing act after beating local rivals Cardigan in the previous tie.

Cennydd James and his team who were only brought into the competition this season, produced the shock of the round last time out when they edged out Cardigan first team, although their opponents C.O.B.R.A will surely provide a much stiffer test.

In the opening round Crymych defeated another local outfit in Newcastle Emlyn 2nds and cup fever has taken a grip in the Pembrokeshire village and a full bus of supporters will be leaving early tomorrow morning for what promises to be an excellent trip.

Their mid Wales opponents C.O.B.R.A (Caereinion Old Boys Rugby Association) are based near Meifod and were founded in 1978 by a group of teachers and ex-pupils from Caereinion High School, Llanfair Caereinion. At that time, there were no rugby clubs anywhere near Llanfair Caereinion, so the establishment of C.O.B.R.A. fulfilled a need for players both young and old.

Success in the Mid Wales District Cup was achieved in the late 90’s, followed by a number of Mid Wales League Championships in the early 2000’s. This progress culminated in promotion to the W.R.U. League Division Five North in 2006 with successful campaigns also in the Welsh National Districts Cup competition during the 1990’s onwards.

C.O.B.R.A currently play in division two north and are third in the table with four wins from five but they were well beaten by Wrexham a couple of weeks ago and struggled against a very mobile pack.

Crymych 2nds ofcourse have nothing to lose as they were not expected to get this far but they will be up for this and their result will be one of the first that local rugby followers look out for tomorrow afternoon and there will be a real cup final atmosphere at Cae Cobra.

Crymych first team host Blackwood in the second round of the WRU Plate and they will  have been boosted by a first league win of the season last weekend. A cup run will not be a priority as they look to consolidate in division one but another win would be very welcome nonetheless.
