WELL DESERVED WIN FOR EMLYN

YOUTH RUGBY

Newcastle Emlyn Youth 19 Carmarthen Quins Youth 7

Newcastle Emlyn picked up their first win of the season after beating a determined Quins side who were very organised in defence and proved difficult to break down.

The red and whites were keen to make up for two narrow defeats at the hands of Felinfoel and Llanelli Wanders earlier in the season and this deserved success was well received by hard working coaches Gethin Davies and Dylan Davies.

The opening half was as expected very even with little to choose between the teams and very few real scoring opportunities with defences on top but some tactical changes at the break by the hosts made a difference and they opened the scoring when hard working flanker Sam Forrester-Evans crossed for the first try of the game after some good work by right wing Dafydd Morgan.

The red and whites looked to attack from deep whenever the ball was kicked to them and they moved the ball quickly in traditional Emlyn style and it was outside half Carwyn Jones who scored the all important second try after a superb pass from second row Osian Davies.

This was converted by Dan Jones and within two minutes the hosts went further ahead when a counter attack from deep was finished off by left wing and man of the match Sion Griffiths to claim his team’s third try.

The Quins though never gave up and came back very strongly and with ten minutes to go the visitors crossed for a consolation try from outside half Rogers, son of former Quins first team fly half Simon Rodgers.

Carmarthen came back again in the final minutes but the Emlyn youngsters held on to the ball to see the game out and to record a first league win of the season.

Speaking after the game head coach Gethin Davies said:” This really was an excellent team performance today, especially in the second half and we could have chosen several players as man of the match. The boys put a hundred per cent into their game today and we are all very proud of their performance.”

Outstanding for the red and whites were Luke Worrall and skipper Ifan Thomas.
