Tregaron 1 Four Crosses 2 (aet)
Tregaron Turfs bowed out of the J. Emrys Morgan Cup at the quarter final stage but they can count themselves unlucky as they could so easily have won this game had they enjoyed a little more luck in front of goal.
Crosses keeper Dan Wood pulled off a series of outstanding saves including one from a point blank header late on in the game and neither side deserved to lose this splendid cup tie. Turfs stalwart Caradog Daniels said that Four Crosses had been by far the best team his side had played this season and it will take a very good performance to beat them.
With so much at stake it came as no surprise that the early play was a bit tasty with some crunching tackles coming in from both sides and the best of the chances in the opening period came when visiting wing Jack Jones delivered a fine cross to Kyle Wilson on the edge of box but his well timed shot just missed the target. This was followed by a Ben Simms effort but his shot struck the side netting.
Tregaron also went close up the other end from a free kick which sailed narrowly over the woodwork before Simms and Jones saw fine shots well saved by the Turfs custodian.
The deadlock was eventually broken just before the break when Kyle Wilson smashed a superb free kick from the edge of the box and the rebound fell nicely to Simms who reacted sharply to fire home from close range.
The Turfs came fighting back straight from the kick off and Crosses keeper Dan Wood who had been a spectator until this point dived low to his right to make a fantastic save.
Tregaron were eventually rewarded for their superb all round team play when Melfyn Davies grabbed an equaliser when his well struck shot shot found its way through a congested penalty box and it was game on.
There were a number of opportunities created by both teams to take the lead in normal time but the matched ended at 1-1 after 90 minutes but a goal followed very soon after the change around when Simms let rip from long range and his shot screamed into the top corner to put his team 2-1 ahead.
Crosses keeper Dan Wood was forced to pull off three more super saves as the Ceredigion side threw everything at the visitors and they were very unlucky not to bag a second equaliser. However the Montgomeryshire outfit who were the better team on the day deservedly took their place in the semi finals to join Fordern United who won away at Newcastle on Clun.
Fordern produced their best performance of the season to defeat Newcastle with goals from Kieran Evans, Darryl Jones and Mike Henderson-Smith steering the ‘Barcodes’ through to the semi final.
The other two quarter finals between Newcastle Emlyn and Ffostrasol and Lampeter and Felinfach were called off due to waterlogged pitches.
