JONES GRABS LATE WINNER

Costcutter League Football.

Lampeter striker Jason Jones was the match winning hero for his team as his superb strike secured three more valuable points and sent his team clear at the top of the division. Writes Andrew Clarke

Jones hit the target with his first real chance of a splendid match that could so easily have gone the way of the Cardigan team who were quite outstanding with none better than teenage defender Callum Thomas and front runner Llion Williams another talented teen.

Great saves

The heavens opened just before kick off and the King George field was very wet but the two teams must be commended for the way they tried to stroke the ball about, assisted by some excellent refereeing from Llyr Evans. Both teams hit the woodwork on three separate occasions and there were plenty of chances but it was the hosts who looked the likeliest winners until Lampeter began to impose themselves in the latter part of the second half and probably just about deserved to edge the contest.

Cardigan created the best of the early chances with Williams going close with a snap shot and influential midfielder Ben Davies missed a sitter from close range. At the other end Lampeter went close following good work by Jones and Christy Gale and the two keepers made superb saves. Both teams hit the woodwork and it was a major surprise that they went in at the break with the score at 0-0.

Magpies midfielder Tom Gardener sent a powerful shot crashing on to the crossbar early in the second half and the woodwork saved Cardigan at the other end when Szymon Konwiak chipped the keeper and his goal bound shot skimmed the crossbar.

A goal though finally arrived with just fifteen minutes to go when Jason Jones broke down the left wing and he cut back and curled a lovely shot into the roof of the net past keeper Steff Marsden for what was to prove to be the winner of a superb game of football in difficult conditions.

In division two goals from Kayne Poulton and Mathew Newbould earned Llandysul Reserves a 2-1 win over Crannog Reserves for whom Daniel Sion Rockley was on target. In the only other game played in the division Newcastle Emlyn Reserves were held to a 4-4 draw by Lampeter Reserves. Danny Williams provided two of the goals for the reds and the others were scored by David Smith and Jake Shakespeare.
