EMLYN YOUTH BACK ON TRACK

YOUTH RUGBY

Newcastle Emlyn Youth 37 Carmarthen Athletic Youth 7

After a long trip and a heavy loss to Gwernyfed the previous week the Emlyn group of young players were looking to bounce back in style and they did just that with a convincing win over the Athletic.

The hosts fielded their strongest possible side and started the game on fire with outstanding flanker Sam Forester-Evans crossing for two well worked tries. This was quickly followed by a penalty from Dan Jones to make the scores 13-0.

Newcastle Emlyn though took their foot off the gas thinking that they had the game in the bag and they started to offload the ball carelessly and they were needlessly turned over.

Athletic grew into the game and took advantage of the possession they had and put some excellent phases of play together although it was disappointing for the young bred and white side that the visitors had to opt for passive scrums.

Just before the break Emlyn prop and Cardiff Uni student Tomos Rees crossed for try after a powerful run to put his team in at the break with a healthy lead of 18-0.

Athletic started the game very positively after the interval and got stronger as the second half went on and they were rewarded with a superb try from when their right winger broke through a weak tackling Emlyn midfield.

In the final quarter the hosts found some extra energy and pressurised the visitors and this resulted in their scrum half being yellow carded and two tries followed in quick succession from strong centres Dan Jones and Harry Williams and this deflated the opposition.

Dan Jones converted one of these to make it 30-7 and with the last play of the game Emlyn moved the ball from deep and ex athletic winger Kyle Thomas ran half the pitch to score a try under the posts which was converted by Dan Jones to complete the scoring and a well deserved 37-7 win.
Man of the match for Emlyn was scrum half Thomas Jones who made some excellent sniping runs and his passing was outstanding.
