TWO TRY HARRIES SETS UP CARDIGAN

DIVISION 3 WEST A.

Tregaron 0 Cardigan 40

Two tries from creative centre Emyr Harries helped set Cardigan up for a comfortable win in the very first league meeting between the two Ceredigion sides.

This county derby battle proved to be a hard fought one as expected especially in the opening quarter but it was Cardigan who came through for a win with their more powerful forwards and bigger ball carriers proving to be the main difference on the day.

The Cardi’s were missing two experienced forwards in the shape of second row Rob Connolly and powerful number eight Colin Davies but club captain Llyr Griffiths made a welcome return to the base of the scrum alongside debutant flanker Gareth Clifford and the visiting pack were very much in control after a tough opening quarter.

Tregaron started brightly enough and took the game to their opponents early on but they found it difficult to break through a solid defensive line with Griffiths and co very organised and soaking up the early pressure with hooker Dan Evans, flanker Keiran Hurley, Harries, co centre Marcus Castle and prop Ben Hughes putting in some big hits

This allowed experienced stand off Iestyn Crompton to dictate much of the play and kick his team deep into Tregaron territory and it came as no surprise when a try arrived to break the deadlock when good work from Clifford, new second row Rhys Tom Williams and hooker Dan Evans set full back Alun Jenkins up for a touchdown and Crompton converted to get the visitors on the scoreboard.

Centre and man of the match Emyr Harries added another try to increase the lead and further tries followed after the break when centre Marcus Castle, who scored a hat trick of tries the previous week, crashed over.

Loose head Tomos Evans was forced to leave the field with an injury and he was replaced by old war horse Richard ‘Rara’ Jones and the scrum remained solid just as it had for most of the game.

Cardigan continued to dominate and further scores followed through skipper Griffiths, fly half Crompton and Harries who capped a fine display with his second try. Crompton added three conversions and there was one for winger Llyr Jones.

This weekend Cardigan entertain St Davids ( yes St Davids again!) but this time in the opening round of the WRU Bowl.
