Len & Julia Newman Memorial Cup
Second division side Penparcau moved safely through to the next round of the Len and Julia Newman Memorial Trophy after they accounted for first division outfit Llanilar.
The hosts welcomed back Ryan Williams & Dylan Bailey from suspension and started brightly playing against a strong wind but with both teams defending well chances went begging early on. However the deadlock was eventually broken when on the half hour a defensive error from Penparcau gifted the visitors a soft opportunity and they didn’t need a second invitation with a good finish.
The home team pushed hard and pressed the game and they were awarded a penalty for a handball offence. Craig Gore saw his penalty kick well saved saved by the keeper but he was quick enough to tap home the rebound. Midway through the second half Penparcau made a change that would help secure the win when Warren Sedgwick was pushed on up front and from a corner he rose above the defence to head the ball across goal for inform striker Lee Morgan to head into the net for a 2-1 win.
Padarn United who were trailing by three goals produced a sensational come back against Tregaron Turfs to win in extra time by 5-4.
The Turfs looked to be coasting through to the next round when they found themselves 3-0 ahead midway through the second half but Padarn battled back to 3-3 in normal time and then sneaked through 5-4 in extra time with Tegid Owen, Rich Williams, Robbie Southgate with a brace and Jason Davies providing the goals.
Cup holders Bont enjoyed a relatively comfortable ride through to the next round after they saw off the challenge of a much improved Llanon outfit.
Bont with several key players missing opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Lee Jones connected with a powerful volley after a cleared corner fell nicely to him on the edge of the box. However within five minutes Llanon drew level after the hosts defence was caught napping and it was 1-1 at the break.
The home side pushed on in the second half and deservedly went ahead when substitute David Beck tapped home from close range and they added a third soon after with a cool finish from Ben Lewis to kill off the challenge of a spirited second division team. Dion Davies completed the scoring with 15 minutes to go when he drilled the ball home to send Bont through by 4-1.
Towyn Bryncrug enjoyed a convincing 4-1 win over Borth Reserves whilst Machynlleth Reserves edged out Talybont by 2-1.
