LLANDYSUL GIRLS ON FORM

South Wales Hockey League

Division 1

Llandysul  2 Penarth 3rds 0

Llandysul welcomed Penarth 3rds to Ysgol Bro Teifi and they were keen to respond positively following a narrow defeat the previous weekend against Kington.

Penarth were promoted alongside Llandysul from division 2 last season so both teams were familiar with each other and it promised to be a hard, competitive game and so it proved.( see the goals below).

Llandysul started well testing the experienced Penarth defence from the start. The east Walians played a very deep defensive line, making it difficult for the hosts to break through and use their pace. Llandysul had to work really hard to find a way through and they enjoyed greater success when they spread the ball out wide to create more space in the middle of the field.

The hosts midfield unit of Emma Jac Davies, Rhiannon Farr, Ffion Davies and Mererid Jones worked hard to create chances for the attack and they had to be patient during the first half to find an opening.

However a first goal came after quick thinking from Tracey Davies from a free hit to find Rhiannon Farr who had moved into space at the top of the circle and she managed to work the ball into the circle to Michelle Davies. She had found some space away from the defence, and fired an excellent shot off into the corner of the goal before the defence and goalkeeper could respond.Despite conceding the opener Penarth responded well but the Llandysul defence of Kelly Davies, Gwenan Evans and Gwyneth Ayers worked tirelessly to keep them out with goal keeper Lleucu Ifans making some great saves behind them and it was 1-0 to Llandysul at half time.

The second half was a tight affair with both teams battling hard to get the better of each other but Llandysul kept the pressure on the visitors circle for most of the half, but Penarth looked dangerous on the break. A second goal came for Llandysul following smart work again by player of the match Farr to find Mererid Jones in the circle and with some persistence she managed to find a way around the goalkeeper to score and kill the game for Llandysul at 2-0.

Many thanks to Cardigan Arms Fish & Chips for sponsoring the match and to the Porth Hotel for the food after the match. Llandysul will travel to Llandrindod next week to play Radnor.

JUNIORS: On Sunday, Llandysul welcomed the under 11 and 13 West Wales tournament to Ysgol Bro Teifi with 4 Llandysul teams playing, all doing really well. Many thanks to the players, parents and supporters for their work in hosting the event, a credit to the club.

Also, the under 16 team played their first match of the season in a competitive match against Pembrokeshire.

The team did really well but lost 1-2 in the end. Jano Evans scored Llandysul’s goal.

The under 16s will be playing again next Friday, 29 November against Carmarthen at Ysgol Bro Teifi at 6.30pm. Come and support them.
