Newcastle Emlyn 5 Llandysul 1
The League Cup will now sit proudly alongside the J. Emrys Morgan Cup in the Newcastle Emlyn trophy cabinet following this cup final victory and the reds remain on course to win a couple more.
The Parc Emlyn side who are in the semi final of the Cwpan Goffa Dai Dynamo also have the Bay Cup to play and they were just too good on the day for Llandysul and ran out comfortable winners in the end.
The reds were two up after only six minutes with the first of these goals arriving when Daniel Davies ran through with just keeper Jon Durbridge to beat but the experienced custodian managed to stop him initially before Davies squeezed the ball home into the empty net.
It was all Emlyn at this point with some strong running in behind the Swallows back four with Dion Phillips in particular causing problems and a second soon followed when a free kick was floated into the penalty box and Emlyn defender George Lowry was fouled . Craig Gordon stepped up and tucked the spot kick away into the net.
Llandysul eventually settled and enjoyed an abundance of possession and they pulled one back when a Dean Jones free kick was headed back across goal and Chris Harries tapped the ball home from close range.
The Swallows pressed hard again after the break and Scott Mayes was unlucky when his goal bound effort was cleared off the line but Emlyn gradually got on top and they increased their lead when Gordon headed home from an Adrian Hazelby cross. The game opened up as Llandysul pushed desperately for a goal and they were eventually stung again when man of the match Gordon put Dion Phillips through for a one on one and he finished with aplomb.
Ashley Summers completed the scoring late on following good work by Phillips to make it 5-1.
Speaking after the game Emlyn manager Owain Thomas, who had failed to beat Llandysul in six previous encounters welcomed this win which he described as well deserved and said:”Once again the squad of players have stepped it up just like they did in the Emrys Morgan final.
It has been a frustrating last couple weeks for us with two very costly defeats and the league championship seems to have slipped away, but this was a great response in winning our second cup final of the season and hopefully this will not be our last trophy of this season.”
