KNIGHTON END AERON RUN

Spar mid Wales League and Cup

Division 1
Knighton 2 Aberaeron 0

On a bitterly cold Friday evening and on a very heavy and bumpy pitch the long unbeaten run of Aberaeron finally came to an end.

The black and ambers had enjoyed a successful few months in between wet weather cancellations but manager Jason Jones was not overly concerned as the second half performance of his team was outstanding and they were unlucky not to pinch a couple of goals.

Knighton started brightly and were first to the ball all over the pitch and Aeron struggled for possession and were generally off the pace and second best.

The hosts took the lead after ten minutes through a sloppy goal following a simple passing move by Knighton that caught the visiting defence flat footed when Tom James fired home but Aberaeron responded well and had a string of corners but without putting the home keeper under too much pressure.

Mikey Gornall was very unlucky with a fiercely struck free kick that hit the post and Chris Aldritt and Matty Davies also came very close, however a second goal was conceded when a very good cross from the left flank was cleverly headed home by Sam Williams for a 2-0 lead.

Some harsh words were spoken at half time and Aberaeron responded positively and dominated long periods of the second half, creating chance after chance. They were unlucky with one goal ruled out for off-side and front runner Matty Davies came close on a number of occasions but Knighton held out for the win they deserved.

In the other games played in division one Borth United suffered a heavy defeat away at Llandrindod Wells by 5-1 and Machynlleth were edged out by Kerry by 3-2.

League Cup round 2.

Abermule 1 Bow Street 2

In the League Cup Bow Street ran out worthy 2-1 winners over second division outfit Abermule on an afternoon when the sun finally decided to shine after weeks of rain. This was the Magpies first game in three weeks but they soon got into their rhythm on a surface that was nonetheless very challenging. Goals from Tomos Williams and Llion Jenkins saw the visitors through to the quarter finals.
