TURFS END SAINTS RUN

J.Emrys Morgan Cup and Costcutter League round up

Former winners St Dogmaels, who have an excellent record in this competition, were left scratching their heads at the end of the game and wondering how on earth they managed to lose this third round tie to Cambrian Tyres League high fliers Tregaron Turfs.

The saints missed a hatful of chances including a few sitters and to add salt to the wounds failed to nail a late penalty from midfielder Rhys Jones but the visitors to their credit rode their luck and more importantly they stuck the ball in the net.

Brilliant saves

St Dogmaels manager Steve Williams, whose team have been playing some decent football in recent weeks was not impressed with the result and speaking after the game said: ”I have never seen a side dominate a game so much and lose.

“ I am very disappointed as some of our chances were harder to miss than to score but fair play to their keeper as he was outstanding and good luck to them in the next round.”

The Turfs weathered the early onslaught at the School Field and worked their way into the game on a very heavy strip and made the break through on the half hour when inform striker Carwyn Earey netted after the hosts had missed a number of golden opportunities through the likes of Peter Almond, Ioan Owen and Louis Harding.

The Saints dominated for much of the remaining hour and restricted Tregaron to just a few long pots at goal and they were gifted one great chance of levelling the game with just four minutes to go but the normally reliable Rhys Jones fluffed his spot kick and it went wide. Tregaron, who lifted this prestigious trophy in 2007 then held out for a 1-0 win and a place in the fourth round.

Ffostrasol who last won this competition back in 1975 coasted through following a convincing win over Presteigne at Parc Troedrhiw. The hero of the hour for the Wanderers was striker Cian Edwards who bagged a fine hat trick.

The tie between Cilgerran Rovers and Penparcau was called off as the visitors conceded the game whilst the tie between Aberdyfi and Felinfach was postponed because of the heavy snow.

League Cup round 3.

Cup holders Newcastle Emlyn came through for a win as expected against second division outfit Llanboidy at Parc Emlyn although Owain Thomas and his side were forced to work very hard for their victory.

The visitors were in the game until late on before a flurry of goals sealed the win for Newcastle Emlyn. The reds enjoyed plenty of the possession and chances in the first half through Dion Phillips Jake Kelly, Craig Gordon and Adrian Hazelby, who all went very close.

The deadlock was eventually broken on the half hour when Hazelby was brought down in the box and John Curran scored from the penalty spot. The second half was more of the same with the hosts having plenty of the ball and Llanboidy rarely troubling the defensive line and with 20 mins to go the second arrived when centre back Oliver Evans headed home a cross from full back Matthew Goodman. Midfielder Curran bagged the third with a superb free kick which evaded everyone including the keeper and roving defender George Lowry secured the win with the fourth goal of the game and his second of the season.

Costcutter Division 1

In the first division of the Costcutter League Crannog suffered a home defeat at the hands of Aberaeron Reserves by 2-1 with strikers Gareth Severs and Jack Chetwynd poaching the goals for the black and ambers. The game between Dewi Stars and Llandysul was also postponed due to the adverse weather.

Costcutter Division 2
Robbie Jenkins

Division two leaders Bargod Rangers fired eleven goals past Crannog Reserves to crown a miserable afternoon for the Llangrannog based club. Much travelled striker Robbie Jenkins netted four times, Josh Kelly and Jae Shae bagged a brace apiece and there were goals also for Dan Evans,Dan Gough and Rhydian Davies.

Aberporth also hit double figures after they scored ten against New Quay at the RAF field where Daniel Davies netted four times. Others to cash in on some generous defending were midfielders Liam Griffiths and Reese Prowse who bagged a brace apiece and Josh Townsend and Mike King who added singles.

The match between Llandysul Reserves and Maesglas Reserves ended all square at 2-2. Jamie Hartley and Scott Mayes were on target for the Swallows but they were forced to come from two goals down. Aaron Hopkins took full advantage of a fumble by the keeper to put the visitors ahead early on and Kyle Chillery doubled the Blues lead before the break with a powerful shot from just outside the box. The Swallows though hit back when Hartley netted in the second half and Mayes levelled matters with a hotly disputed spot kick.

In division three Llanboidy Reserves cruised to a 7-1 win over their Maesglas counterparts where man of the match Rhys Evans claimed four goals. Others were provided by Ifan Davies, Chris Thomas and Iolo Clement. Barry Jones was on target for the Blues.
