DAVIES GOAL SEALS WIN

Spar mid Wales League

Division 1
Aberaeron 2 Berriew 1

A late winner from Matty Davies secured a well deserved win for Aberaeron over Berriew to set the black and ambers up nicely for their Boxing Day derby against local rivals Bow Street.

The seasiders dominated large parts of this game but they were stung by a goal out of the blue by their opponents to level matters but Davies saved the day with his second of the match in the closing stages.

After the disappointment of a postponed match last week, Aberaeron were keen to test their abilities against one of the senior teams in the league but the extremely bumpy strip made life difficult and both teams initially struggled to string passes together.

The hosts were on top for most of the first half and were unlucky not to be at least two goals to the good but honours were even at half time with the clear message from Aberaeron manager Jason Jones to his team was to continue the good work and they would surely, get their reward.

Chance after chance was created after the break and Matty Davies was unlucky on numerous occasions to be flagged off-side whilst Sion Clark brought a fine save from the keeper with a thunderous 30 yard effort.

Liam Jaques after stinging the fingers of the keeper in the first half was unlucky with a great left foot effort that grazed the bar and Chris Wilkins, back to his best had numerous jinking runs which caused the visitors difficulties all afternoon.

The pressure was increasing on the visitors as the half wore on and Gareth Severs made an immediate impact in deftly heading the ball on to Matty Davies to run through and score. Davies came very close a few minutes later when he brilliantly controlled the ball, flicking it up in the air and he acrobatically bicycle kicked the ball and this brought another great save from the visiting keeper. Aberaeron created a couple of further opportunities and then a couple of substitutions by the mid Wales outfit led to a hotly disputed goal when a visiting forward looked to be off-side and the ball was thumped past Barry Edwards who had no chance of stopping the shot.

With only a few minutes left it looked like two points dropped for Aeron but Matty Davies showed his goal scoring prowess once again and scored the winning goal with a deft finish and a great way to announce and celebrate the birth of his new baby!

On Friday evening Borth United suffered their eleventh defeat of the season when they were beaten 6-2 by division high fliers Carno at Park Avenue. Jac Petrie bagged two of the goals as did Jordan Jones and their were goals also for Peter Rees and Ioan Humphreys with his first of the season. Ryan Edwards and Ryan Davies were on target for the Crows. All the other games in division one were called off.
