Spar mid-Wales League round up
Division 1
Aberaeron produced an excellent all round display to defeat basement rivals Kerry by 3-1 and manager Jason Jones will be looking for more of the same when the seagulls take on mid table side Knighton Town at home this weekend.
The seasiders pitch was in remarkable condition considering all the rain overnight and the game started brightly with the hosts having the upper-hand in the opening quarter but Kerry began to take some control and they put the home defence under a great deal of pressure and the visitors took the lead when a long range free kick, which was driven low and hard took a wicked deflection on its way past a stranded Barry Edwards in goal.
The seagulls though bounced back and dominated the remainder of the half but their long ball tactics were dealt with comfortably by the Kerry defence but an equaliser eventually came when Liam Jaques picked up the ball deep and ran at the defence and his well struck shot hit was palmed into the net by the visiting keeper.
At half time there were some tactical changes and the message from manager Jones to his players was to play the ball to feet and for the attacking players to run at the defence at every opportunity.
This advice paid handsome dividends when a cross from Liam Jamie found Mikey Gornall and he let fly with a shot that was deflected into the net to give his team a well deserved lead.
The remainder of the game was managed well by the seagulls and they kept things tight and didn’t allow Kerry any real chances of note and the result was sewn up late on when a long goal kick from Edwards was flicked on and young substitute Ianto Evans released the predatory Mattie Davies who beat the goalkeeper with a very good finish to make it 3-1 and seal the three points.
Bow Street enjoyed a hard fought win after they edged out Tywyn Bryncrug by 4-3 with goals from Andrew Gittins, Tomos Evans, Llion Jenkins and Mark Gornall with a penalty but there was no joy for Borth United as they were thumped by eight goals to one away at league leaders Welshpool Town.
