Cardigan 10 Laugharne 41
Laugharne enjoyed one of their most comfortable wins at the King George for many a year when they romped home by seven tries to two.
The visitors whose only victory this term in three west was against Llangwm, played far better as a team than their opponents and generally let the ball do the work opting to avoid some of the big hitters in the Cardigan side and they conjured up a number of excellent tries through some slick passing.
One of the most disappointing aspects was the way the visitors were allowed to walk in for some of these touch downs with the hosts tackling very disappointing throughout.
The Cardi’s went behind straight from kick off when impressive outside half Owain Thomas romped in after only 20 seconds and a second try followed very soon afterwards when back rower Williams powered his way over
Cardigan came back strongly with number eight Colin Davies and blind side Llyr Griffiths making some decent inroads and carrying the ball effectively and they should have done far better with an attacking scrum just fifteen metres out from the Laugharne try line.
The visitors hit back with a superb team try when the ball was passed quickly through the hands and along their back line and Williams was again on hand to dive over for the third try of the game.
Flanker Williams was back on the scoresheet very soon after when he ran in behind the hosts defence to catch a pin point chip kick from stand off Thomas and the Laugharne bonus point was in the bag well before the end of the opening half hour.
Cardigan lost hooker Luke Palmer Davies for a yellow card offence and within a minute prop Ben Hughes was forced to leave the pitch with an injury and things started to go from bad to worse with a few home players falling out with the referee following a number of contentious decisions.
The Carmarthenshire side pulled further ahead two minutes after the break with another try from Williams which was converted by full back Ross Michael to make it 27-0 and the game by this stage was all over as a contest.
Flanker Williams added another to his tally when he finished off another excellent move with the ball once again going quickly through the hands and this was converted by Michael, but Cardigan to their credit came fighting back and were rewarded for all their hard work when back rower Davies was carried over the try line from a driving maul.
Laugharne hit back with their final try of the game as stand off Thomas showed off his footballing skills when he dribbled the ball over to put his team ahead 41-5 before teenager Cardigan winger Tomos Jones showed a superb burst of pace in the dying moments when he broke through from the scrum half position to score under the posts to end a disappointing afternoon.
This was another difficult day at the office for an understrength Cardigan squad and they face many more of these over the next few months as playing resources at the King George are very thin on the ground with a distinct lack of experience in key areas.
Teenage second row Sion Phillips made up for his lack of size with a committed performance as did half backs Dion James and Owain Rees whilst young hooker Palmer-Davies grafted hard. Skipper Emyr Harries tried his utmost to create openings for his team mates and full back Llyr Jones looked dangerous when he was moved up to outside half midway through the second half.
This weekend Cardigan are away at Neyland and the week after entertain Milford Haven.
