Cardigan eased their way through to the second round of the Welsh Carruthers Shield Club competition after they defeated Llanelli based outfit Havelock Park at their Gwbert Road green.
Skipper Paul Monders (pic above)and his men made a super start and their four rink team were 30-3 up after only four ends and the reigning Ceredigion champions looked on for a huge win. However the visitors quickly got used to the fast Cardigan green and clawed their way back into the game and they were within 11 shots of their opponents at the half way stage and closing fast.
There was still little to choose between the teams at the three-quarter stage but a confident display in the final quarter saw Cardigan through to win by 84 shots to 62.
Captain Monders led by example and he and his trio of Paul Edwards, Chris Rogers and Emyr Davies were the top rink and won 27-13. They were followed closely home by Mark James and his three of Brian Davies, Syd Freemantle and Dilwyn Jones who won 21-14. The four of Colin James,Mike Williams, Neville Morgan and Kevin James made it a hat trick of wins with a score of 20-14 but a big finish by the Havelock Park rink led by Mike Williams edged out the Cardigan four of Andre Bann, Freddie Lloyd, Brian Williams and Mike Newcombe by 21-16 to prevent a clean sweep.
Cardigan travel to Gilfach for round three on July 8th a team that they have beaten in recent times. A win here could see them take on Skewen in round three and a chance for revenge after losing out by one shot overall last season.
Lampeter were not so fortunate and went down narrowly at home against local rivals Carmarthen by just six shots and they take on Tick Tock in round two.
