Urdd National Swimming Gala

A year 6 pupil at Ysgol Llandudoch won a bronze medal at the recent Urdd National Swimming Gala in Cardiff.

Zac West, 10, secured third spot in a close 50m backstroke final. The Urdd primary and secondary schools gala, on 21st and 22nd January, boasted some of the best age group swimmers from across Wales.

The St Dogmaels youngster overcame any nerves to became the first pupil from the school to secure a medal at the competition. Sadly, his classmate Kayleigh Fischer was unable to compete after picking up an injury on the eve of the event.

West swims for Fishguard Flyers and Pembrokeshire County Swimming. He qualified for the Cardiff event after winning the years 5 & 6 backstroke race at the Urdd Pembrokeshire gala in November.

The young Flyer took this fine form into the Cardiff showdown, posting the third fastest heat time of 40.04 seconds. He grabbed bronze in the final after touching in 40.54 seconds.

Fishguard Flyers celebrated one of its best ever set of Urdd results, as the north Pembrokeshire club’s swimmers won 4 medals at the gala.

Zachariah Owen also secured bronze for the years 3 & 4 25m backstroke; Ysgol Preseli pupil Rhys Davies came away with bronze in the 200 individual medley (boys 16-19 years old) in a time of 2:30.35; and the years 3 & 4 Ysgol Croesgoch mixed medley relay team capped off a successful competition for the club with silver.
