Costcutter league round up
Newcastle Emlyn waved goodbye to any hopes they had of catching runaway leaders Llandysul after they were held by Aberaeron Reserves at Cae Sgwar. The reds looked like the only team apart from Lampeter in with a realistic chance of catching the Swallows in the race for the title but that now looks unrealistic following their goalless draw.
At the other end of the table Bargod Rangers picked up their second win of the season when they defeated Cilgerran Rovers following an exciting 4-3 thriller.
Rovers, who were missing seven first teamers struggled early on and they went three goals down with Jake Kelly netting two of them and Lyndon Robinson the other but the Coraclemen fought their way back and a quick-fire hat trick from visiting front runner Dan Bellis made it all square at the break.
Rangers were presented with a great chance to regain the lead when they were awarded a penalty but the spot kick was kept out by impressive young goalkeeper Jonathan Ridley who had a fine game. Jack Fisher though made amends later in the match when he fired home to seal the three points for Rangers. The injury toll continues to rise at Parc Y Dre as Cilgerran have lost the services of Grant Colmer who suffered a broken metatarsal against Bargod and is out for the season.
The Parc Puw men looked down and out just a few weeks ago but they are now back with a chance of avoiding the drop under new manager Sam Skinner and the battle in the relegation zone between Rangers, New Quay, Felinfach and Aberaeron Reserves promises to be a fascinating one.
St Dogmaels warmed up nicely for their clash with rivals Cardigan Town this weekend with a comfortable win over New Quay. The visitors though got off to a flier at Parc Arthur when Jason Thomas latched on to a long throw that caught the Saints defence napping and he put his team ahead. The Saints came back strongly and were soon on top thanks to midfielders Adam Williams and Rhys Jones who were outstanding as a pair and they drew level when Johnny James netted. Jones added a second just before the break with a delicate chip over the keeper and further goals followed in the second half with man of the match Chris Jones bagging a brace to see his team through for the win.
Division 2
Pencader came back from the dead to claim a share of the spoils against promotion rivals Maesglas with substitute Ashley Summers grabbing a late equaliser.
The Blues who started well, had the home side on the back foot from the opening minutes and made their possession pay when Billy Myers scored the opening goal. This seemed to ruffle the Kites feathers and they began to put their stamp on the game and after some decent chances they earned themselves a penalty and Zac Morgan drew the hosts level.
Maesglas responded and stepped up a gear with Callum Plowright, Myles Harrison, Keiran Harman and Billy Myers working well down the Blue’s flank and Dan Jones finished clinically from close range to put the Blues back in front.
The visitors added a third soon afterwards with the same combination and a similar finish but this time it was centre midfield partner Ricky Holmes firing in at the far post.
Pencader manager Kevin Evans brought on hot shot Summers for the second half, this his first appearance after a serious knee injury had kept him out for a few months and he soon made a difference and his team responded with a goal from midfielder Rhodri Rees to put the pressure back on the Maesglas side.
There was more to come from Pencader as they grabbed an equaliser when a Daniel Jones shot rattled the crossbar and as the ball came back, the quickest player to react to the rebound was substitute Summers and he passed the ball into the back of the net to claim a point for his team.
Ffostrasol kept up the pressure on leaders Maesglas with a convincing win away at Aberporth where talented teen Dion Phillips netted a hat trick. The Wanderers were far too good for an understrength home team and further goals from Iolo Thomas, Bleddyn Morgan and Carwyn Morgan capped a well deserved win for Ffostrasol.
Llanboidy were also convincing winners as they fired ten past SDUC with full back Dafydd Vaughan and midfielder Rhys Jenkins both claiming hat tricks.
How often has a full back scored a hat trick in the Ceredigion League? Peter ‘Twts’ Williams scored a few for Maesglas in the eighties but this must be quite a rare achievement just as it is for Dafydd Vaughan to score one!
Sion Thomas, Williams Ellis and Celt Thomas Jones added the others.
