SEAGULLS WEATHER THE STORM

Spar Mid Wales League: Division 1

Aberaeron 2 Welshpool 0

Aberaeron got back to winning ways with a much improved show against Welshpool to climb up into fifth place in division one.

The seagulls who suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Carno the previous week, struggled early on in the very windy weather, and the bumpy pitch also made life difficult for both teams. Holding on to the ball proved very difficult with the swirling wind and chances were at a premium.

Talented teenager Thomas Jones created some excellent chances with some accurate crosses whipped into the Welshpool penalty box but the black and ambers were unable to make these count early on.

However a goal eventually came when a corner driven in by Jones found Sion Clark who headed powerfully into the net for one of his trademark goals to make it 1-0.

Playing against the wind in the second half, Aberaeron showed their quality by playing neat possession football with the ball holding up and they created a number of good opportunities.

The seagulls continued to dominate and substitutes, Dan James and Matthew Clark created a few decent of chances whilst Clark was denied a clear penalty when pulled down in the box and then he came very close to adding a second when he dribbled his way through the defence but was denied by the keeper.

Aberaeron finished the game strongly and were well worth the three points.

jason-jonesSpeaking after the game manager Jason Jones said he was both pleased and relieved with the win and added:”

“I must pay credit to the lads as we were under pressure to take three points and we could feel that early on as we were slow to settle.

“We have a decent group of players this year and they saw us through comfortably really, but conditions on the day were awful.

“So it was a case of well done all round and we now move on and start thinking about our match against Berriew in a few weeks.

“With no game now for a fortnight we have some time to concentrate on training and to get prepared for the winter.”
