Newcastle Emlyn Youth 36 Pontyberem Youth 5
Pontyberem were the visitors to Ddol Wiber on Saturday and both teams used the occasion to give squad players the opportunity to start the game.
The opening quarter was a hard fought affair and the deadlock was broken when Emlyn captain and outside half Ifan Thomas made a fantastic break from his own twenty two metre area and ran the length of the field to score and birthday boy Jordan Evans converted.
The red and whites sensed that that the opposition back line were struggling in defence and attacked with every opportunity and this positive intent resulted in Tomos Griffiths crossing for two further tries following some good support play by his team mates.
One of these tries again converted by Evans to make the half time score 19-0.
Pontyberem started very strongly after the break and put the hosts under intense pressure and after three penalties in succession awarded against Newcastle Emlyn, Pontyberem scored a well deserve catch and drive try from a lineout.
Emlyn then upped the tempo and scored the try of the game with some tremendous offloading and support running which allowed skipper Thomas to score in the corner.
Dafydd Morgan increased the home lead five minutes later after some elusive running from the winger and this was converted by Thomas.
With the game in the bag Emlyn scored the final try from some excellent lineout play resulting in powerful forward Harry Williams barging over to seal a 36-5 success for the hosts.
There were some notable performances with a handful of players deserving the man of the match award with captain Thomas and winger Sion Griffiths among the contenders but it was decided that Osian Davies took the award because of the consistent performances he has put in so far this season.
The game was well officiated by young referee Sion Edwards from Cardigan.
