OLD RIVALS WARM UP FOR THE NEW SEASON

Cardigan 19 Emlyn Dreigiau 7

Cardigan and their local rivals New castle Emlyn produced an entertaining pre season friendly on the weekend and both clubs will have been pleased with the overall showing of their squad. Dreigiau who are largely made up of players outside of the first team squad matched the Cardi’s in all departments but it was Colin Horscroft and his men who were a bit more clinical in the danger areas and they scored three well crafted tries to cross the line as worthy winners in front of a healthy crowd. Second row Rob Connolly barged his way over for the opener after ten minutes and outside half Llyr Jones slotted over an excellent conversion to give Cardigan a decent start and number eight Sion Hughes added to this with a well executed try following good work from scrum half Aaron Evans and blind side Gethin Jones. The greens came back strongly into the game prompted by experienced fly half Barry Thomas and aided by hard running forwards in the shape of Gareth Thomson and Llyr Evans and a try soon followed when scrum half Gwyndaf James stole the ball from under the noses of Cardigan at a defending scum five meters out and touched down under the posts.

Thomas converted and there was very little between the teams in the second half in what was a  very hard but sporting contest and it took a moment of inspiration from substitute scrum half Luke Rogers to finally seal the 19-7 victory with a try in the dying minutes to flatter the scoreline.

Dreigiau who have been by far the most successful team in the Scarlets league in recent times have been chosen to pilot an experiment by the WRU that will see them playing teams from Division 3West C of the National League this season.

This weekend Newcastle Emlyn first team welcome Cardiff Met in their opening fixture in the Championship whilst Cardigan entertain St Davids in their season opener in Division Three West.

Emlyn Dreigiau travel to Llandybie for their first ever game in the new pilot scheme.
