Pembrokeshire Cricket Division 3.
Don’t write us off just yet were the battle cries coming out of the Crymych camp on Saturday after Rhodri Lewis and his men completed their second success on the bounce at the expense of relegation rivals Lawrenny 2nds.
Some observers have all but given up on the fate of the Crymych team after a tough start which has seen them firmly rooted at the foot of the table all season.
The Preselimen have endured a difficult few months with players being unavailable but this victory has given skipper Rhodri Lewis and his men a small ray of hope and an outside chance of avoiding relegation if they can carry on in the same form.
His team are now creeping up in the right direction and a win away at bottom side Hook 2nds this weekend and another defeat for Lawrenny, who play high fliers Saundersfoot would make a huge difference.
Division 3
Lawrenny 2nds 131 all out
Crymych 132 -8
It was an inspired innings by middle order batsman Ioan Davies that helped rescue Crymych from the jaws of defeat after a poor start and more importantly earned his side a second win in succession.
Visitors Lawrenny who are also struggling near the bottom of the table were put into bat and they found life very difficult against some very tight bowling with none better than medium pacer Harri Dunn who returned figures of 4-13. Steffan Williams with 3-30 and all rounder Ioan Davies with 2-30 wrapped up the remaining wickets and the visitors were all out for 131.
Ryan Morton was the best of the Lawrenny batters with 36, Steve Cole made 29 and Mike Lewis chipped in with 25.
Chasing a modest total of 131 seemed well within the reach of the Preselimen from the off especially as they had prolific scorer Richard Thorne within their ranks. The Crymych talisman had produced knocks of 87 and 99 not out in previous weeks but on this occasion he was sent back to the pavilion with only four runs to his name. The hosts innings then spluttered to 60-6 and they looked down and out until captain Lewis and Ioan Davies knuckled down to produce a seventh wicket partnership of 60 to save the day and effectively win the match for their team.
Davies carried his bat for an impressive innings of 73 which included seven 4’s and four 6’s and if both Davies and Thorne can produce big scores over the next six weeks anything is possible for a side just one place off the bottom and who have to keep this winning run going to have any chance of staying in division three.
