REES-DAVIES AIMING FOR A SHOT AT THE TITLE

Cardigan boxer Ben Rees-Davies completed the season for the Army team with a very unlucky defeat on a split decision in Berlin but he has his sights firmly set on the Welsh light welterweight title next year.

Boxing for the Army against the German Army the proud Welshman was the only member of the nine man team to lose out on the night but it was a very close call with many of the opinion that he done enough to beat his opponent from Kazakhstan, a class opponent who had fought at the World Championships last year.

The West Walian started slowly and lost the opening round and admitted that he found it hard to get his range and land any decent shots but he got better as the fight went on and added:”In the second round  I started at a higher pace with both of us landing good shots on the end of exchanges.

“And in the third round I thought I had done just enough to win it as I came out strong and was beating him to every shot and was getting my straight punches off much better than the earlier rounds.

“ I really thought I had won the last round comfortably and my coach was more than pleased with my performance and he also thought I had done enough to maybe steal the verdict but unfortunately it went to a split decision to my opponent.

“But fair play to him he did box well and I had started far too slow in the opening rounds but I can take many positives away from the night.”

Ben is taking it easy for a while as he has holidays coming up and looking back he can hold his head high and he feels upbeat about the future and said” Overall I have had a good season mixing it up with the best amateurs in the world and seeing as I haven’t boxed for four and a half years I have done well, especially after being thrown straight into the deep end but I feel like I am improving every time I take a step into that ring and I am sure my time will come next season.”

“But now it’s time to relax and enjoy my summer with family and friends and come back fresh headed and focused in September for a big season and a hopeful a Welsh title.”
