SCRUM HALF EVANS PICKS UP THE TOP PRIZE

Scrum half Aaron Evans picked up the most prestigious award at the Cardigan RFC annual dinner and presentation evening held on the weekend.Writes Andrew Clarke.

Evans who was a very consistent performer throughout the season in division three has improved hugely over the past couple of years and is very much an unsung hero on the field as he is a real grafter. His selection as the ‘players player of the year’ came as no surprise as he has made the number nine shirt his own and the popular young player who started out on the wing for Cardigan  is someone who always gives his all.

Centre Emyr Harries was awarded the player of the year chosen by the committee for a succession of powerful performances in both attack and defence and he was one of the stand out midfielders in the division. His ability to punch holes in the opposition defence was a key factor for the Cardi’s as they went in search of the division three title.

Haverfordwest eventually pipped Colin Horscroft and his men for the championship following a nail biting title showdown against the Blues at the end of April  but Horscroft and his men will re-group and come back again next season.

Fly half Iestyn Crompton the Cardigan playmaker in chief was the highest points scorer of the season with 162 points and his boots are going to take some filling when he decides to call it a day as  he is a quality stand off who would have been playing in a  higher standard had it not been for knee problems.

The Gareth Mason Memorial Trophy for the most promising player was awarded to prop forward Tomos Evans and he has come a long way since his first team debut away at Aberystwyth two years ago when he and his front row colleagues took a battering. His prize was collected in his absence by assistant coach Marc Phillips and presented by Jan Mason.

Fellow prop and second team captain Ben Hughes was chosen as the most improved player of the year.

The prize for the top try scorer was shared between Alun Jenkins & Emyr Harries who both crossed for 12 tries. Ben Hughes was the development squad player’s player of the year.

Youth team outside half  Iwan John  was highest points scorer for his team,Tomos Jones was the team’s most improved player, Sion Phillips collected the youth senior player of the year and youth player’s player of the year, Connor Owen was the youth junior player of the year and Dion James the youth senior most improved player.

Hard working first teamer Rhydian Jenkins was clubman of the year.

Russ Hassler picked up the development squad most improved player and Jonathon Evans was the development player of the year.
