MAGPIE LUMB IS THE MAIN MAN

Outstanding Cardigan Town footballer John Lumb carried off the main award at the Magpies Annual Dinner and Presentation on the weekend when he was chosen as the player’s player of the year.

Lumb who was forced to play in several positions, especially during the second half of the season with so many injuries but excelled wherever he performed and he was the one player who could lift  his team at vital moments, with his power, pace and superb fitness which were so important as games came in thick and fast.

Manager Seamus Doherty and his men had to play 12 league games in less than four weeks during the final part of the season and the Magpies managed to retain their league title following a showdown with nearest rivals Lampeter Town on the very last day of the season.

Lumb was also chosen as the clubs player of the year although there were a few other strong candidates in skipper and sweeper Steve Blackford who had an outstanding season, unsung midfielder Dylan Davies whose work rate was so impressive in every game and Iestyn Evans who had a superb final few months when the pitches eventually dried up.

Teenage starlet Liam Doherty was the clubs highest goal scorer and Tom Gardiner was the most improved player of the year. Tomos Toft was chosen as the young player of the year and he was the stand out candidate along with Doherty and showed a great deal of promise. One champagne moment was his creation of the final Cardigan goal for Doherty when he came on as a sub against Lampeter and the three goals he scored away at Bargod Rangers.

Young striker Johnny Rees was a popular choice as both the most improved second team player and top goal scorer whilst goal keeper Joe Roscoe, who was kept very busy all season was the second team players player of the year.

Midfielder Emlyn George was the second team player of the year and he put in some very promising performances in the first team during the last couple of months of the season and always looked comfortable in the centre of the park.
