South Wales Hockey League
Division 1:
Llandysul 8 Cardiff University 3rds 2
Six goals from Llandysul hot shot Tracey Davies helped her side secure one of their best results of the season in this top of the table clash at Ysgol Bro Teifi.
The visitors arrived on the back of a fine run of form and were sitting pretty in second place in the division with the Ceredigion ladies just below them in third and this contest, sponsored by Lyn Evans Accountants of Llandysul, promised to be an interesting one played out on what was a fine spring morning.
The gale force winds that seem to have been around for ever finally kept away and the hosts started positively by pressing from the off and creating problems for the University defence and an early goal arrived within the first five minutes when front runner Tracey Davies deflected a cross into the back of the net.
This sparked the University into action and their midfield and attack worked well as a unit but the Llandysul defence of Elen Williams, Gwenan Evans and Gwyneth Ayers managed to keep them out with Lleucu Ifans also working well in goal.
The home attack of Tracey Davies, Michelle Davies and Crisial Gwenllian always looked dangerous and created problems for the students throughout the game and it came as little surprise when a second goal came for Llandysul with Michelle Davies scoring with a great reverse stick shot.
The hosts midfield were on top at this stage with player of the match Rhiannon Farr and Emma Jac Davies finding accurate passes for the attack and the latter steered a ball through to Tracey Davies and with Cardiff playing a high defensive line Davies was through on goal and her pace saw her dribble around the keeper to score an excellent goal.
Ffion Davies, Mared Jones and Mererid Jones also worked well to close down the visiting attacks and Llandysul were well worth their three goal lead at half time.
However the students started the second half with a much higher tempo and following a period of pressure they reduced the deficit to make it 3-1 but the home side hit back almost immediately and they scored three goals in quick succession with Tracey Davies scoring another two and one more for Michelle Davies to make it 6-1.
The students kept battling and they scored a second goal from a short corner before Llandysul stepped it up again when Tracey Davies scored another two goals to take her personal tally to six- making it 8-2 at the final whistle.
A superb all round showing from the west Wales side with young players in the shape of Ellie Evans and Jano Evans outstanding and making an important contribution to an excellent team display by Llandysul for what was a very important victory to take them into second place in the table..
Many thanks to Lyn Evans, Accountant Llandysul for sponsoring the game and to the Porth Hotel for the food after the game.
This Saturday Llandysul are away at Kington
