WINS ALL AROUND

West round up.

There were plenty of reasons to be cheerful in the west as both Crymych and Aberystwyth were successful in division 1, Fishguard sneaked through in division two and there was a convincing victory for Aberaeron over Haverfordwest in division 3.

There was no joy though for either Lampeter or Tregaron as both went down to home defeats against Amman United and Milford Haven respectively.

Division 1 west
Kidwelly 0 Crymych 30

Crymych kept their excellent run going with their eighth win of the season and they now occupy fourth spot in division one.

If someone had offered this high flying position to captain Rhys Davies before the season started he would have taken their hand off after such a difficult campaign last term.

Dafydd Phillips

The Preselimen went at their opponents from the start and were far too good for the relegation threatened side and they crossed for early tries through fullback Alun Jenkins, back after injury and scrum-half Dafydd Phillips. Fly half Hari Williams converted one of these and he also landed a penalty to give his side a healthy lead at the midway stage.

Further tries followed as the north Pembrokeshire side dominated possession with centre Gethin Gibby and winger Tomos Lewis adding to the try count for a well deserved bonus point win.Teenage stand off Williams added the extras.

Aberystwyth 20 Gorseinon 13

Heavy conditions and torrential rain just prior to kick-off made for very difficult playing conditions and a stop start contest with neither team able to generate a head of steam or much continuity in attack.

Gruff Jones chips ahead

Aber were first out of the blocks and from a scrum on the ten metre line scrum half Gruff Jones put through a lovely weighted grubber kick which Ian Ellis chased and forced a scrum five and from this Gorseinon conceded a penalty which Steff Rees converted to open the score.

There then followed a period of stalemate with both defences dominating and the occasional knock-on contributing to a rather uneventful period of play. Gorseinon were next to score when they kicked deep into the Aber 22 and were awarded a penalty converted by Popham to level the scores. Aber were stung into action and pressed the visitors and Llyr Thomas took full advantage when he hacked the ball forward and won the race for the touch-down. Steff Rees converted with a splendid kick in difficult conditions.

Gorseinon hit back when after winning a line-out they drove through their forwards and with a disciplined rolling maul they drove Southgate over to score a try which was converted to level the scores at ten points apiece. Aber closed the half with a very good team try which was finished off by Mathew Hughes to take a half time lead of 15-10.

The second half continued in much the same vein with defences largely dominating but a third home try followed when the ball was quickly recycled from a scrum and Bryn Shepherd was on hand to dive over the line.

With the last play called by the referee Gorseinon opted to take a penalty converted by Popham to earn themselves a losing bonus point to make the final score 20-13 to Aber.

Division 2
Fishguard & Goodwick 14 Mumbles 12

Fishguard bounced back from defeat to edge out Mumbles by just a couple of points following a hard fought contest in very wet and windy conditions.

The seagulls who lost our narrowly in the corresponding fixture at Underhill Park were forced to hang on in the final quarter as Mumbles came flying back at them and had they managed to convert a late try they would have shared the honours.

It was the hosts who scored the only points of the first half when they were awarded a penalty try for a dangerous tackle near the posts. A second try followed when from a succession of drives through the likes of Chris Shousha, veteran Simon James, second row Ben John and prop Ryan Mc Veigh, back rower Shousha was driven over and stand off Geraint Jones added the conversion.

The visitors hit back and crossed for tries by Craig Reeves and Rhys Griffiths, one of which was converted by Tom Richards to set up a tense finale but the hosts managed to hold on for a win.

Division 3 west A
Aberaeron 33 Haverfordwest 3

Aberaeron gained a welcome win against the Pembrokeshire Blues and one that keeps them on tabs with league leaders Milford Haven.

This game which was played in horrendous conditions was almost called off due to the deep surface water but this disappeared just in time for kick off and the show went on. Haverfordwest arrived at Parc Drefach without a recognised front row, and the game went ahead with uncontested scrums. Despite playing into the strong wind it was the Seagulls who secured the first try with the imposing Gethin Hughes crossing for his third of the campaign with Rhodri Jenkins adding the conversion. But despite being without a front row, it was the visitors who dominated from the restart and they reduced the arrears with a penalty from Liam Mainwaring. The hosts having weathered the storm then struck back with number eight Tudur Jenkins crossing from a quick penalty leaving giving Aberaeron a 12-3 advantage at the break.

no 8 Tudur Jenkins

With the wind behind their backs after the turnaround Aberaeron soon increased their lead with another try from man of the match Tudur Jenkins, with namesake Rhodri Jenkins adding his second conversion. With the home team hunting for the bonus point try, the visitors had other ideas and they dominated possession and came at Aberaeron in their direct and confrontational way and pressed hard for a long period.

However the hosts defence which was epitomised by hard tackling hooker Sion Evans held firm and having withstood the period of pressure Aeron came back with a well worked try from strong running Aaron Lewis, with Jenkins again converting.

The final try of the match came from a well worked move by the Aberaeron backline with replacement wing Owen Williams touching down in the corner and Jenkins converted for a final score of 33-3.
