LAMPETER CLOSING ON SAINTS

Costcutter League round up

Lampeter cut the deficit at the top to just three points after a comfortable win over bottom team Bargod Rangers and on current form player manager Terry Witts and his men look the side most likely to push St Dogmaels for the title in the New Year.

Witts who has been joined by former manager Terry Jones on the touchline as assistant, felt that his team should have wrapped this game up by half time such was their dominance but they didn’t take their chances.

Gethin Hunter finally put the north road team ahead midway through the first half and had it not been for some sterling defending and a few timely last ditch blocks on the goal line by Rangers the visitors would have been out of sight.

Hunter added two more after the break to put the game to bed and Gethin Edwards added a fourth goal to complete the scoring in a game where there were some very tasty tackles especially from the Parc Puw men. For Lampeter, sixteen year old full back Rhys Davies made a promising debut.

Llanboidy sweat it out

At the other end of the table Llanboidy were forced to sweat it out at Felinfach after they saw their 4-0 lead reduced to a single goal in the second half and the Carmarthenshire side were forced to tough it out in the final quarter.

The visitors who had first use of a howling wind found themselves four goals to the good by the break with Ellis Williams with two and Celt Thomas-Jones and Chris Bowen on target. However the milkmen fought back to make it 4-3 and were presented with a glorious chance from the spot but they were unable to capitalise as Llanboidy keeper Bleddyn Williams saved the penalty.

A late winner from midfielder Lewis Jones (top pic) ensured that Llandysul returned to winning ways following three defeats on the bounce. The Swallows were missing a few regulars but they managed to eventually overcome the challenge of a very experienced Aberaeron Reserves side who included veterans, Rhydian Davies ,Tim Tinney and player manager Steve Evans all of whom are over forty and putting many young kids to shame. Further goals from Ifan Sion and Craig Harries sealed the win.Simon Bray and Tristan Jones netted for the black and ambers.

In division two Dewi Stars took full advantage of the postponement of the Aberporth v Newcastle Emlyn game to close the gap on the leaders to two points.

Before the match a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Arwyn Roberts, a founder member of Dewi Stars in 1959 and who later became a highly respected referee throughout Central Wales.

To be fair to the visitors the 4-0 scoreline does not reflect how close the game was, because until the 75th minute, the home team only led by a solitary goal in a competitive game.

Nathan Jones brought off an outstanding save from a Siencyn Jones volley as it headed for the top corner, before Leon Holmes released Oscar Cayo Evans from the resultant corner to open the scoring with a low drive that took a cruel deflection.

For the next hour the game swung from end to end with both defences stretched. Llandysul’s experienced trio of the ageless Andy Gordon supported by Huw Evans and Mathew Newbold prompted their young team to play attractive football but the arrival of substitute Tomos changed matters.

http://www.teifikitchens.co.uk/The talented Glamorgan County cricket academy player turned the game on its head for the last 15 minutes with a quickfire hat-trick, this his first at Senior level. He doubled the Stars lead as he tucked his shot in under pressure from the edge of the box for his first. Five minutes later he bagged his second and the Stars third as he drilled in an unstoppable drive from the edge of the box.

With less than five minutes remaining, Liam Nelson’s volley heading towards the top corner was superbly saved, but unfortunately by a Llandysul defender and not custodian Nathan Jones. Tomos Jones was handed the ball and duly completed his hat-trick from the spot to keep his team well in contention for promotion just below division two leaders Aberporth

All the other games in division two and three fell victim to the wet weather.
