SAINTS PULL AWAY

Costcutter League round up

Division 1

St Dogmaels pulled five points clear of their nearest rivals Llandysul following a convincing 4-0 success over reigning champions Lampeter Town at the School Field and they also have a game in hand.

The visitors who had beaten Felinfach 2-0 earlier in the week thanks to goals from Christy Gale and James Gudgeon started very brightly and Saints keeper Casey Walters was forced to pull off one excellent save to deny Luke Lovell after only a few minutes. However the home side gradually worked their way into the game and began to dominate possession and Billy Myers fired the greens ahead when he latched on to a through ball from midfielder Adam Williams and tucked the ball away confidently. The Saints enjoyed a succession of chances before the break but they were unable to capitalise and it was 1-0 at the interval.

St Dogmaels continued in the same vein in the second half and were eventually rewarded when Louis Harding fired home from close range. Two further goals from substitutes Aled Rees and Mike Diggle sealed the three points for the league leaders.

Outstanding at the back for the hosts was skipper Jason Williams and colleague Mindugas along side him. They did well to keep out the threat of Lovell and Jason Jones, a dangerous pairing up front for Lampeter.

Cardigan Town never recovered from the shock of conceding two freak goals early on against Newcastle Emlyn and were well beaten in the end by 5-2. Magpies keeper Sion Rockley was deceived by a speculative pot shot from the half way line by reds midfielder John Curran for the opener and this was followed by a second just a couple of minutes later and in similar fashion. The scorer this time was wide man Scott Williams who also managed to chip Rockley from long range. The Town custodian though dusted himself down and to his credit kept very well for the remainder of the game.

Cory Davies

This unsurprisingly knocked the stuffing out of a young Cardigan side missing several key players and Emlyn added a third goal when veteran Carwyn Thomas, back in the familiar red strip, drilled the ball home from the edge of the box. Steff Davies opened the home account for Town with a well taken free kick just before half time but there was to be no respite for the hosts as outstanding defender Huw Jonah Jones made it 4-1 for the reds with a tap in from close range.

Thomas added his second midway through the second half with a fine individual effort but it was Cardigan who had the final say when central defender Gus Reckford capped a fine individual performance with a late consolation goal.

Thomas and Evans
like fine wine!

Both clubs struggled for players prior to kick off and there were several new and very young faces on the park, but the two that stood out were the two veteran midfielders in Carwyn ‘Yonk’ Thomas who is 42 and Justin Evans who is a few years older! They might not have the gas of old but their first touch was better than most and they always played with their heads up and were a shining example to the younger generation learning the game around them.

There were no goals at Pontgarreg where hosts Crannog were held to a goalless draw by Llandysul but both teams will look back and rue missed opportunities. Crannog were guilty of missing several gilt edged chances although they were unlucky as they hit the woodwork on two occasions. They also came up against a solid defence with none better for the Swallows than central defender Dean Jones.

Ffostrasol notched up their second league win of the season after they emerged narrow victors against Llanboidy thanks to a goal from Adam Jones.

Division 2

Front runner Ifan Thomas was the star of the show at Llanddewi Brefi after he bagged four goals against St Dogmaels Reserves. Thomas who was a handfull all afternoon was joined on the Dewi Stars scoresheet by Martin Rees, Guto Green, Leon Holmes and Tomos Jones. Osian Thomas was on target for the visitors.

Division two leaders Maesglas consolidated their lofty position with a hard fought win over Ffostrasol Reserves. The Blues took control from the start but lacked the killer instinct in front of goal, but the breakthrough eventually came when a superb ball from Kieran Harman, set off Kyle Chillery down the right flank and his cross was met by John Midgeley to put the Blues ahead. Maesglas made a few changes at the break and this soon worked for them as substitute striker Arron Eldridge finished clinically from close range to double the lead.

With 20 minutes remaining Ffostrasol bagged the goal they thoroughly deserved when Cai Edwards was on hand to steer the ball home from a free kick to make it 2-1. Super sub Eldridge rifled home his second of the match late on, giving keeper Gary Jones little chance to secure the three points for Maesglas.

Goals from Dan Nichol and Dafydd Owens helped secure all the points for Aberporth away at Llandysul Reserves.

The match between Newcastle Emlyn Reserves and New Quay was cancelled as Emlyn could not raise a team.

In the Reserves Cup a hat trick from Llanboidy striker Gethin Scourfield helped his team secure a 6-3 win over their Crannog counterparts whilst others on target were Ifan Jones, Owain Gibbin and Clive Jones.

Lampeter Reserve also enjoyed a convincing win as they fired eight past Maesglas Reserves without reply.
