J.Emrys Morgan Cup round up.
Ceredigion Costcutter League leaders St Dogmaels, who are strongly fancied by many observers to win this prestigious competition were far too good for Newtown Wanderers and coasted to a well deserved 6-0 victory at Latham Park on the 3G strip.
The Saints have enjoyed an excellent start to the season and are as yet unbeaten in the Costcutter League but there was very little to choose between the sides in the opening half hour although the home keeper saw more of the ball with Jack Thomas a constant threat down the right wing and he eventually created an opening for Pete Almond who made no mistake from close range on 32 minutes. A second goal followed soon afterwards when Chris Morgan slotted home from the edge of the box to make it 2-0 at the break.
This two goal volley spread confidence across the team and the greens really turned it on in the second half and played some superb football and produced their best performance of the season so far with further goals from Jack Thomas, Louis Harding, Craig Williams and probably the goal of the game from Almond with a screamer from well outside the box.
There was very late drama at the King George Field, Talgarth when highly fancied Bont were undone in the final minute with a howler of a goal. The Tangerines who are currently flying high in the Cambrian Tyres League, conceded late on when a defensive clearance by their keeper hit his own defender and fell nicely into the path of Talgarth Town striker Harry Sharman who needed no second invitation to fire his team into a 1-0 lead and the final whistle was sounded very soon after.
Former champions Lampeter Town enjoyed their long trek home after they fired eight goals past Llanwddyn. The game was all but over by the break with the visitors three goals up thanks to Gethin Hunter, Richard Thomas and Luke Lovell. Further goals followed in the second half as the visitors continued to dominate with Lovell, Hunter and midfielder Marc Evans (2) putting their team out of sight. Player manager Terry Witts completed the rout.
Cardigan Town who won this competition back in 2015 made their long trip north also pay dividends as they won 2-0 despite being without several regulars. Midfielder James Evans netted from the penalty spot and Tom Gardner was also on target.
Llanboidy who lowered the colours of Cardigan Town two weeks ago in a league match enjoyed another fine win when they defeated Welshpool Reserves at Cae Dandre. Midfielder Rhys Jenkins capped an excellent individual performance with a couple of goals and there was one apiece for Frazer Wyatt and roving defender Dafydd Vaughan.
Llandysul, winners in 2017 were far too good on the day for visitors Machynlleth Reserves and coasted to an 8-0 victory. Front runner Jason Clayton led the way with four goals and the other goals came via Ashley Summers who claimed a brace, Mark Jones with a cracker and an own goal.
Dan Barton was the star of the show for Guilsfield Reserves as his five goals steered his team to an easy 6-2 win away at Aberporth. Mark Davies was also on target for the visitors.
Former winners Maesglas were well beaten away at in form side Padarn United where hosts front runner Paul James helped himself to a hat trick. Paul Keegan was also amongst the goals as he bagged a brace and Billy Williams Steve Jones Matt Piglet and Jason Davies also made the most of some generous defending by the Blues.
Crannog, who were finalists in 2015 cruised to victory away at Felindre and fired home thirteen goals without reply. Mark Davies who was moved up front due to a striker shortage took to the job like a duck to water and claimed a first half hat trick. He and Robbie Evans eventually went on to bag four goals apiece. Fellow front runner George Colven netted twice and there were goals also for Huw Owens, Rhys Davies and Eifion Jones as Crannog romped to victory.
Dewi Stars, winners in 1993 went out at the first hurdle as they were beaten 4-1 at Trewern and there was no joy for Felinfach as they were edged out by Tregaron Turfs by 2-1. The Turfs who are another of the well fancied sides to lift this trophy missed several decent chances but they were the best team on the day and deserved to go through thanks to a goal apiece from Deian Williams and Ifan Jones. Aberaeron Reserves emerged from a seven goal thriller to beat Abermule Reserves by 4-3.
Ffostrasol were given a walk over after their opponents Maesrhandir withdrew from the competition but there was no joy for Bargod Rangers as they were knocked out by Penybont who were 4-1 winners thanks to goals from Alphie Stonefield, Phil Ruell and two from Scott Davies.
