Ceredigion South football round up.
Central Wales Challenge Cup
Newcastle Emlyn earned a place in the last sixteen of the Central Wales Challenge Cup after they beat Four Crosses in extra time at Parc Emlyn.
The reds looked as if they were on their way out of the competition with just four minutes to go of normal time as they were losing to a Gareth Jones goal but they managed to rescue the situation with a late equaliser from substitute Jake Kelly.
Manager Owain Thomas kept to the same ten outfield players that won so handsomely in their previous match away at Knighton Town Reserves and from start to finish there wasn’t much to choose between the sides with chances very scarce.
The first chance of note in the first half for the reds arrived when Dion Phillips skipped passed his marker out on the wing and he unleashed a shot that hit the bar with them keeper beaten whilst the visitors enjoyed a couple of half chances which were comfortably dealt with.
The home side took the lead just a few minutes into the second period of extra time when Kelly was upended and defender Huw Jones tucked away the spot kick and the result was wrapped up when Cory Davies claimed a third goal for his team with Philips once again the provider.
Emlyn are on the road in the next round and take on the winners of the clash between Spar mid Wales first division rivals Carno and Bow Street.
Reigning Costcutter league champions Llandysul gave a very good account of themselves in the Challenge Cup before they lost out to unbeaten side Builth Wells by 4-1 although the Swallows were indebted to keeper Jon Durbridge for making some outstanding saves to keep his team in the game.
The hosts who have been in good form in recent weeks took an early lead with goals from Ritchie Powell and Adie Jones before the Ceredigion men halved the deficit with a goal from Chris Harries following good work from Josh Baker.
The game was still in the balance going into the final quarter but when the home team finally nailed their third goal through Powell it seemed to knock the stuffing out of Llandysul. Durbridge though continued to keep Llan in the game with one save in particular from point blank range top class but he could do nothing about the fourth goal claimed by Harry Bastable as the hosts moved through comfortably in the end.
Cwpan Goffa Dai Dynamo
Cardigan Town produced the shock result of the day when they knocked out previously unbeaten Bont at Parc Pantyfedwen in the Dai Dynamo Cup.
The Magpies who have a very young side this season rode their luck in the early stages as Bont dominated but they took the lead when they were awarded a contentious penalty when Josh Mellor was upended and Mellor calmly converted to give Cardigan the lead.
The home side continued to press but were unable to get a shot on target and the Magpies grew in confidence and dealt with the heavy pitch far better than Bont and were rewarded when a cross into the home box was tapped home by Tomos Toft.
Bont reduced the deficit with 25 minutes remaining when Ben Lewis netted with a stunning curling effort into the top corner and the hosts then had two glorious chances to get level from very close range but failed to convert with Town keeper Neil Evans making one very smart save and with just ten minutes to go Bont were punished when a fine run by Toft down the right hand flank saw the ball slipped to Emlyn George who produced a great finish into the bottom corner to seal a 3-1 win.
Costcutter League
Division 1
There were only two games played in the Costcutter Ceredigion League with the pitches in the south of the county still too wet following the festive rains and Crannog were the winners of the only game played in division one.
The Llangrannog based side took an early lead when Dylan Jones scored with the faintest of headers and his team were coasting on the hour after two goals from striker George Colven had put the hosts well clear.
However the milkmen replied with two goals in quick succession before Mike Glover chipped in with his first goal of the season and substitute Josh Taylorson completed the scoring late on to make it 5-2 to Crannog to push them up into second place in the table just four points off leaders Lampeter Town.
Division two leaders Bargod Rangers pulled four points clear at the top after they accounted for title rivals Llanboidy at Cae Dandre thanks to goals from Lyndon Robinson and Dan Evans.
