AERON HELD BUT MAGPIES WIN

Spar mid Wales League

Division 1
Churchstoke 2 Aberaeron 2

A soft goal conceded late on denied Aberaeron a hat trick of wins in division one but they will be looking to bounce back this weekend in the League Cup.

The seagulls who have been in decent form in recent weeks appeared to be heading for their third consecutive victory until a late strike cost them after they failed to clear their lines.

The seasiders started well enough and they enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but had nothing to show for it at the end of the opening half and they were stung when Churchstoke took the lead just after the break when Tony Meredith fired home.

However the visitors rallied and levelled matters after good work by James Hemmings saw Chris Wilkins through on goal and he tucked away a very good equaliser. Aberaeron then continued to put pressure on the home defence and the Churchstoke keeper did well to keep the game level. A second goal though eventually arrived when Elwyn Edwards rose magnificently to thunder an unstoppable header into the roof of the net to put Aberaeron 2-1 up.

The visitors looked to be on their way to three more points with only ten minutes to go but they failed to clear from a free kick and the ball fell kindly to Andy Green and he made no mistake from close range to beat keeper Ollie Fairbrother. The black and ambers entertain Dolgellau this weekend.

Bow Street enjoyed a narrow win over Llanfair United in a feisty game that threatened to boil over several times with the official in charge having his hands full to control tempers especially in the dying moments.

It was the home side though who came through for the three points with goals from Rhun Garner and Steffan Richards to move up into seventh place in the table.

Borth United slumped to their tenth defeat of the season when they lost out to Radnor Valley by 5-0.
