Borth United came through a very tense and exciting cup tie to take their place in the next round of the Welsh Cup.
The Crows were forced to take the tie to Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue ground due to their own pitch being waterlogged after heavy rain and the match was only five minutes old when a mix up in the Trewern defence allowed Ryan Edwards to nip in and toe poke the ball passed the keeper visiting keeper.
The second goal soon followed as Clive Morgan’s deft through ball fell to Ryan Edwards whose low shot was saved by the keeper but the loose ball was netted by Jamie Walker who was ever alert at the far post.
Trewern to their credit responded positively and a glancing header from Shaun Roberts reduced the deficit and minutes later Roberts scored his second goal with a neat lob over Justin Davies to tie the scores and crank up the tension.
Minutes later it was the upright that came to Borth’s rescue as a scorching drive from Jake Mann rebounded to safety to keep the scores level at 2-2 at the half time interval.
The match continued at a fast pace in the second half with some good chances being created by both teams and Borth again took the lead with Lee Crumpler scoring with a thumping header from Jay Walker’s free kick.
From this stage Borth took firm control of the tie with Ryan Edwards’s cross come shot from the left wing beating the keeper at his near post, and Borth’s fifth goal owed much to Edwards and Lee Jones close passing which allowed Josh Evans to slide the ball into the empty net. In the final minutes talented Trewern front runner Shaun Roberts scored with a cool finish to complete his well deserved hat trick.
Borth United return to league action against Machynlleth at Uppingham Fields this Wednesday 23rd August ko 6-45. Report by Robin Davies
Newcastle Emlyn 0 Pencoed 2
Newcastle Emlyn were knocked out of the Welsh Cup at the preliminary stage but opponents Pencoed were forced to work hard as the game was in the balance until very late on.
Manager Owain Thomas drafted in new signing Dion Phillips who has transferred from Ffostrasol and he showed some classy touches and with former Pencader front runner Craig Gordon set to sign this week Emlyn will be a force again this season.
However it was the old heads of Sam Skinner and Steve Hicks at the back who kept the hosts in the game as they made some timely interventions as Pencoed pushed hard.
The visitors took the lead in the opening quarter when Ben Treharne netted before the reds created a number of chances through Peter Almond who was forced off with an injury late on but a late goal from Keegan Rees in the 82nd minute killed the game off for a well deserved win.
