Costcutter League Division 2
Maesglas 2 Llanboidy 2
A thunderous shot from Ricky Woods-Holmes in the dying minutes of this very entertaining division two clash saved the day for Maesglas and it may well have saved their title hopes.
The Blues will be disappointed at dropping two points but they could so easily have lost this game as Llanboidy played very well and created enough chances to have put this game to bed long before the end.
It was due to the superb condition of the pitch that this match went ahead at all and although it cut up heavily in the second half it still allowed for a decent game that was well officiated by Rhys Steadman.
Llanboidy were the better side in the opening minutes and took the lead after a cross into the box caused chaos and from one ricochet to another it fell kindly to Llanboidy midfielder Rhys Jenkins and he fired in from close range to put the Cae Dandre boys in front.
Maesglas replied with a few half chances but it was Llanboidy who were creating the better opportunities with none better for them than Jenkins who was outstanding in midfield and a surprise when he was taken off late on. Llanboidy really should have extended their lead as they were the better team in the second quarter but the hosts defended well.
The Blues enjoyed the best of the early chances after the break and they were rewarded when their man of the match Billy Myers broke through and latched on to a flick over the top from Keiran Harman and his chipped volley sailed over Llanboidy keeper Bleddyn Williams and into the net.
Graham Keen in the Blues goal had a quieter second half but unfortunately a rash challenge on a Llanboidy player on the edge of the box brought another goal from the away side. A soft goal to give away after the wall had done its job but the Llanboidy players were quicker to react to the loose ball and Chris Bowen from just a few yards buried the ball into the back of the net giving Keen no chance.
Maesglas looked down and out at this stage and the Foxes really should have wrapped this game up as they created some very good openings but the sticky conditions frustrated their efforts and the hosts pushed hard in the last few minutes and they managed to salvage a point in dramatic fashion when from a Harman corner the ball was only half cleared to the edge of the penalty box and Woods-Holmes managed to fire the ball through a wall of attackers and defenders and into the net.
This was a heavy blow for the men from Cae Dandre who played some splendid football in the difficult conditions and they were left to rue a few golden opportunities missed but a draw was a fair reflection of the game.
