CRANNOG CRUISE THROUGH.
J.Emrys Morgan Cup round up
Two goals from experienced striker Gary Davies helped steer Crannog into the quarter finals of the J Emrys Morgan Cup after they fired five past borders side Newcastle.
Davies the former Emlyn striker hit the visitors with two quick fire goals in the opening half to set his team on their way and a step closer to Crannog reaching the final for the third time.
The Llangrannog based outfit who lost in the final of this prestigious competition two years ago against Cardigan Town started slowly playing into what was a very strong wind and they were forced to defend resiliently in the early stages. However they went ahead against the run of play with a super goal from a flowing move which ended with Rhys Davies feeding George Colven who smashed it across the keeper into the corner.
This was just the spark that manager Dylan Vaughan Evans and his team needed and they were much better after this and dominated the game and pulled further away through goals from Gary Davies who grabbed two in quick succession and Chris Welch with a close-range finish after good build up work by Colven. Midfielder Dylan Davies made it 4-0 just before half time with the hosts having used the swirling wind to good effect and using all their experience of playing in difficult windy conditions.
It was all Crannog after the re start and they kept the ball well with Newcastle spending most of the period in their own half. Goal keeper Rhydian Morgan was rarely called upon to make a save of note and only touched the ball a few times but Crannog never really made this domination pay. They did though grab one more goal eventually through experienced centre back Rhydian Roberts, who was again outstanding throughout, and he rose above a tired defence to head home a Rhys Davies corner kick.
A very long trip home for Newcastle especially after being outplayed for much of the game but Crannog can now look forward to the draw for the quarter final.
Bont joined Crannog in the last eight after they secured a 3-1 win over Hay St Marys with front runner Lee Jones bagging a well-earned brace and Fergus Morris grabbing the other goal.
A hat trick from Rhun Garner helped steer Tregaron to the latter stages to make it three so far from Ceredigion following a 6-1 win over Llanidloes Reserves. Dylan Davies, Ifan Jones and Dan Jones were also on target for the Turfs. The matches between Berriew Reserves and Cardigan Town, Pencader v Llandysul, Caersws v Dewi Stars and Llanfyllin v Llanilar were postponed due to the weather conditions.
