Welsh Women’s Premier League
Aberystwyth Ladies 3 Briton Ferry Ladies 1
Aberystwyth Ladies bounced back from a disappointing defeat at Port Talbot to produce a winning performance against Briton Ferry. Writes Ffiona Evans.
Aber kicked off with the intensity managers Kevin Jenkins and Ray Hughes were hoping for and they were soon on the attack and Amy Jenkins was presented with the first chance of the game with a powerful long range shot which was tipped round the post by the visiting keeper.
Front runner Ffion Wyn Roberts used her strength and held the ball up well for player of the match Helen Evans to run tirelessly at the Ferry left back time and time again and it came as no real surprise when the deadlock was eventually broken in the 41st minute.
Tania Wylde’s curling corner was cleared off the line to Ffiona Evans who squared the ball across the six yard box to Sian Evans to fire home.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Aber on the ascendency for most of the time and attacking the visitors with every opportunity and a second goal duly arrived on the hour when Ffiona Evans got on the end of a Josie Pugh free kick to slot into the net.
Aber though were not finished yet and the goal of the game arrived soon afterwards when Jenkins got her head on to the end of another Wylde corner with a bullet header at the near post with fifteen minutes to go.
Kelly Thomas who was winning every header in the middle of the park almost made it 4-0 when her long-range strike was superbly saved and tipped over the crossbar by the keeper.
Deep into injury time Briton Ferry bagged a consolation goal from a corner, but the game was over and Aber celebrated picking up all three points.
The ladies now have a couple weeks break due to cup fixtures and return to league action on the 12th Feb when they travel to Cardiff Met in search of more points. ( Pictures by Beverley Hemmings).
