SHORT MAT BOWLS-Cardiganshire County League
High fliers Rhydlewis now lead the County short mat league following a narrow 5-3 success over rivals Llechryd whilst second placed Manordeifi who were held to a 4-4 draw away at Penrhiwllan are in the runners up spot.
There were also two very competitive matches between Tygwydd and Caerdwedros with the latter winning by 6-2 on the Tuesday evening but then going down to the Llandygwydd based outfit the following night by 7-1.
There were victories also for Capel Dewi over Orllwyn by 5-3 and Mydroilyn who picked up a full house against Dolphins to claim an 8-0 success.
Llechryd 3 Rhydlewis 5
Llechryd got off to a good start in the singles, leading 7 – 1 after the fourth end. Rhydlewis fought back to 10 – 7 in favour of Llechryd going into the last end. Rhydlewis managed a three to make it a draw.
The pairs was a close game, both teams taking one or two points on each end until the Rhydlewis duo pulled away and went on to win the game.
Rhydlewis made a good start taking four on the first end of the triples. It was a bit of a struggle against the experience of Rhydlewis for Llechryd, but they did take a well-deserved four on the 7th end to make their losing score more respectable.
In the fours, Llechryd got off to a flier and scored a three on the second end. They played well, keeping Rhydlewis at bay. By the seventh end, Llechryd were still six points ahead. Rhydlewis fought back to take a five making it a more even score. On the last end, both sides had the chance to win but Llechryd held on for a rink success.
Penrhiwllan 4 –Manordeifi 4
In the singles, Steve Reynolds dominated the game for Manordeifi and cruised home to win. The pairs was a more even game, with Manordeifi never racing ahead, but maintaining control to win by a comfortable margin.
The home team were much steadier in the second half of the match, never giving either the visiting triples or fours a look in.
