Costcutter Ceredigion League Division One.
Newcastle Emlyn, one of the main contenders for the Division One title moved up to within five points of leaders Llandysul after they ran out worthy winners against Dewi Stars by 2-0.
The reds controlled much of the opening half and they managed to break the deadlock midway through the half when Huw Jones slotted home from the penalty spot following a hand ball and this sparked a period of real quality with several decent chances created but they all went begging as the hosts front runners failed to convert.
The Stars started the second half strongly and put Emlyn under pressure for the opening quarter before the hosts hit back and got into their stride, playing some good football and Ben Thomas, who came on for his first outing for the reds, scored with a lovely finish to kill the game off.
St Dogmaels were able to put together their strongest side of the season for their trip to Aberaeron Reserves and they produced one of their best performances for some time. It was Aberaeron though who started the brightest and saints keeper Aaron Walters was forced to pull off two great saves early doors. The visitors got stronger as the game went on with the defence very solid with captain Jason Williams outstanding, and his team took the lead when John Migley, who had an excellent game netted on the half hour mark after a great ball through from Rhys Jones.
This was how the score remained until the 75th minute when Chris Jones scored and just a minute later Migley got his second of the game to cap a fine afternoon for him and a 3-0 victory for his team.
Cardigan Town enjoyed a comfortable win to retain their second spot in the division after they beat a New Quay team who could only muster eleven players with veteran Colin Jones sportingly coming out of retirement to help out his former team mates.
Town who looked very sharp at times with the likes of Ewan Jones, James Evans, Tomos Toft and Lee Burrows knocking the ball about intelligently and it was Jones who bagged two of his team’s goals. Centre back and skipper Iestyn Evans who was a tower of strength throughout provided the third goal with one of his trademark strikes from long distance.
