Cardigan moved back up into the number one position in division three west after they completed a comfortable victory over Llangwm although it was the defeat of previous leaders St Clears that enabled Llyr Griffiths and co to climb up the table.
The Saints who are next up on the Cardi’s hit list, were surprisingly put to the sword by Milford Haven and on home soil to boot and they will be keen to make amends this weekend at the King George or their title ambitions will quickly disappear.
Cardigan as expected, were far too strong for the Wasps at Pill Park and it only took them a couple of minutes to cross the hosts try line when talented centre Emyr Harries raced over and this was followed up ten minutes later when winger Dafydd Jenkins sneaked across the try line wide out.
The home side worked hard to get themselves back into the game through the likes of scrum half Rhys Mason and flanker Gethin Thomas but the visitors defensive line which was poor at times the previous week held firm although their job was made a little easier by a succession of dropped passes by the Wasps.
Cardigan stand off Luke Rogers, who was impressive throughout, waltzed his way over for a try on the half hour which he converted and he added a penalty just before half time to put his team 19-0 ahead.
The visitors made another positive start straight from the kick off when number eight Griffiths powered his way over for a try from a scrum five and this was converted by Rogers and this bonus point sealing score effectively killed off the game as a contest.
Hard working flanker Sion Hughes crossed for the fifth try and the same player capped off a fine individual performance when he bagged the final try of the match which was converted by Rogers to seal a 39-0 victory.
It was a very important bonus point in league terms as it puts Cardigan one point ahead of Pembroke at the summit although the Scarlets do have one game in hand. The Saints have been demoted to second place just a point ahead of the Mariners in third.
This week coach Colin Horscroft and his men will be fully focussed on the challenge that awaits on Saturday and with a few places up for grabs there should be a healthy battle to make the starting line up.
