SATURDAY FOOTBALL PREVIEW:
Cup Football: Cwpan Dai Dynamo
Most of the local football action this afternoon involves teams playing in the opening round of the Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo with the exception of reigning champions Cardigan Town who have a bye into round two.
Bargod Rangers who lost out narrowly to the Magpies in the final at Ffostrasol last season travel to the School Field to take on a Saints team who were battered by league leaders Llandysul last Saturday.
Player manager Chris Thomas has been busy recruiting this week in a bid to stop the rot and his squad has been significantly boosted by the signing of former player Adam Williams from Newcastle Emlyn.
Midfielder Williams is a talented footballer but he couldn’t quite nail a regular starting place at Parc Emlyn where there is hot competition for a place in the middle of the park and he has decided to return to his roots and to a club where his brother Jason is the skipper.
This is a good signing for Thomas as Williams is a player who is not afraid to put his foot on the ball and he will make a difference.
Another to have put pen to paper is Simon Wilson who can also perform in the middle of the park or out on the wing and former Aberporth man John Midgley is another newbie set to make his debut. Ioan Owen though is unavailable.
Rangers will have been boosted by their 1-1 draw with Town last time out and will travel with real optimism under new manager Gethin ‘Peachy’ Davies but they face a difficult assignment this afternoon.
Cilgerran Rovers meet Dewi Stars this afternoon and this tie promises to be an entertaining one with the Stars on fire in front of goal and the Rovers starting to settle down nicely in division one of the Costcutters. Manager Neil ‘Mogs’ Morgan has a full squad available to him for the first team this season, with the likes of Oli Evans, Gary Evans and Dai Williams hoping to dominate against a young Stars outfit and the Rovers have hungry goal scorers in the shape of Louis Harding and Dan Bellis.
Lampeter Town face a tough tie away at Penrhyncoch Reserves but Luke Lovell and his men are a team in form and apart from a blip in the opener they are looking good.
Today they are without excellent midfielder Gethin Davies who is away on holidays and his presence will be sorely missed although young Scott Davies is now available to play as is old head Terry Witts and there is plenty of cover in the Town squad.
Llandysul make the short journey up the Teifi Valley to take on another Cambrian Tyres outfit in Tregaron Turfs, a team that have enjoyed a mixed few weeks with three wins from seven in the league. Manager Chris ‘Coco’ Davies has pretty much a full squad to choose from with both Ian Barrett and Terry Maynard back to full fitness in midfield and this will be a decent test for the Swallows.
Second division side Pencader take on a Bow Street Reserves team that have made a very bright start to the season and apart from a heavy 6-1 defeat at the hands of Bont they have won all their games comfortably with the exception being a 1-1 draw against Tregaron. Kevin Evans has a few missing from his ranks but says he is hopeful of getting the job done.
Maesglas will have their hands full this afternoon as they take on a Bont team that have yet to taste defeat this season with eight wins from nine and Paul Jones and his Blues team will have to produce something special to get a result at Pantyfedwen Park.
Crannog will be looking to turn the tide following some poor results when they entertain Llanon, division two outfit Ffostrasol host Padarn United ,Llanboidy make the very long trip to Talybont and Aberporth entertain Machynlleth Reserves.
