A MARATHON EFFORT FOR CANCER

“Sleep can wait. Beating cancer can’t.”-

Two friends from Newcastle Emlyn completed their first half marathon on the weekend called the Shinewalk for Cancer Research UK and they raised almost £1000 to help fight cancer. Writes Anwen Francis.

This though was no ordinary London marathon as it took place at night around the streets of the capital city and Shelagh McDonald and Pamela Atterbury were two of the 7,000 people from all over the UK who took part.

‘We signed up at the start of the year when my aunty, Brenda McDonald, was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She sadly passed away in June this year and I wanted to do something to help raise vital funds and awareness of this very cruel disease, and to make my aunt proud,’ explained Shelagh, who would like to thank everyone for their kind generosity.

She added: ‘As soon as I’d mentioned it to my friend Pam, she also signed herself for the event. We’ve been training in between work and family life, and have been fitting in as much training as possible for the event. To date, we have raised nearly £1000!’

This isn’t the first event the friends have done together to raise money for charity, they have done a number of things for the Autistic Society too. And on their return journey from the Shinewalk, are already planning their next challenge, this time for the Alzheimer’s Society.
