Cardigan secured their second win on the bounce after defeating Llangwm and this made up for a narrow loss in the corresponding fixture earlier in the campaign at Pills Park.
The Cardi’s who produced arguably their worst performance of the season were fortunate that their skipper and number eight Tom Taylor was wide awake as he scored two excellent tries but they were the only highlights of the afternoon apart from a late score by replacement wing Cerith Griffiths.
It was Taylor who opened the home account with a well worked touchdown in the opening quarter but the next hour of the game was as bad as it gets. If the Gollop Stand faithful had retired to the bar for an hour and then returned they would have missed very little as the score remained at 7-0 and the scrum would have been in the same part of the field as when they left with the official in charge still blowing his whistle every forty seconds.
The liveliest aspect was arguably the half time team talk from coach Tudor Harries as he was not a happy man and who could blame him. ‘Shambolic’ was one of the adjectives of his we are able to print and he was not far from the truth as all the good work in training appeared to have gone out the window.
The referee though did not help matters and one wonders why in a game of such poor quality he would want to penalise every marginal throw in to the line out and every minor forward pass. Have they not noticed that there are fee paying spectators freezing their bits off in the stand?!
Thankfully the game livened up in the final few minutes with Griffiths going over the whitewash following a fine team move and good hands from fly half Iwan John. This was converted by full back Llyr Jones who instigated this score with a run from deep.
Taylor ran in for his second try of the match in the dying seconds to cap a fine individual performance and he was well served by veteran tight head prop Andrew Fletcher who continues to belie his age but that was about it as Cardigan failed to build on an excellent showing the previous weekend against Neyland.
Next up for Cardigan is an away trip to St Davids on December 28 and an excellent opportunity to repay the hard work of the coaches with some heads up rugby.
