Division 1 & 2 west -Rugby round up

Division 1

Aberystwyth 49 Tenby United 25

Aberystwyth emerged well deserved winners of this very entertaining contest at Plascug which saw both teams spread the ball wide at every opportunity.

It was Tenby who opened the scoring with an early penalty but the next period of the game belonged to Aber as they subjected the seasiders to a series of attacks with strong carries and a try followed when Carwyn Evans burst through and offloaded to co-centre Mathew Hughes for a try which was converted by outside half Steff Rees.

This was then followed by a second try from a line out when hooker Geraint Evans was driven over by his pack and this was converted by Rees. The Ceredigion men who were dominant at this stage then added a third try when left winger Dylan Evans cut through and set up scrum half Gruff Jones for a try once again converted by Rees.

Tenby re grouped and hit back with two tries in quick succession, the first of these claimed by winger Geraint Powell and the second of these by full back Jack Tucker but just as the half time whistle was about to be sounded Carwyn Evans took a quick penalty and ran through a disorganised defence to score a fine try which was again converted by Rees for a half-time lead of 28-13.

Aber scored first in the second half with arguably the best try of the game when following a series of slick off-loads Evans burst through to score which was again converted by Steff Rees but the see saw nature of this game continued as Tenby hit back with a try wide out by number eight Harry Owen.

Further tries from the hosts followed through winger Dylan Evans and a penalty try but there was one final try for the visitors when Jack Davies crossed the whitewash to clinch a bonus point for his team and Lloyd Thomas added the extras.

Gowerton 26 Crymych 20

A losing bonus point was the only reward for Crymych at Gowerton and the Preselimen will be looking to bounce back when they entertain Dunvant this Saturday.

The hosts who are flying high in division one this term were keen to make amend for a defeat at the hands of Crymych just a few weeks ago and they were well ahead at the break leading 21-10 with centre Tomos Phillips crossing for the visitors and Ifan Phillips slotting over a penalty and conversion.

Tomos Lewis added a second try to the visitors tally which was converted by co centre Phillips who also added another penalty but Gowerton, who crossed for tries through Josh Hayward, Anthony Osborne and Phil Hartley who bagged a brace squeezed through for a narrow win. Lyn Simons slotted over three conversions.

Division 2

Fishguard and Goodwick 27 St Clears 24

The Seagulls were well worth their second win of the season but they were forced to work very hard for this against a full of fight Saints side who finished very strongly.

The hosts got off to a flier for a change, with an unconverted try by second row Gwilym Evans before St Clears bounced back with two tries from centre Will Davies, both converted by Rhydian Jones who also added a penalty to put the visitors 17-5 ahead.

Fishguard though hit back just before the break when after good work from fly half Kyle Keane centre Sion Reynolds crashed over and Keane converted. They then followed this up when winger Ed Bendall crossed to make the scores level at 17-17.

The match was right in the balance going into the latter stages until young winger Rhys Evans followed up a long punt from Keane to gather and race over for a try that effectively won the match. Keane converted and a few minutes later added a penalty but he and his side had to dig deep late on as the Saints came storming back with a try from Rhodri Evans converted by Rhydian Jones, but the seagulls hung on for the win.
