THE SAINTS MARCH ON

Costcutter Ceredigion League

Division One round up.

St Dogmaels made it four wins on the bounce after they edged out Llandysul by 2-1 at Tir Y Dref following a tough physical battle that produced two red cards.

The Saints who had impressed against neighbours Cardigan Town in midweek went behind early on when talented front runner Harri Wilson pressurised the St Dogmaels defence into making a mistake and a lobbed back pass from defender Dan Jones flew over the head of keeper Aaron Walters for an own goal.

As the home side pushed again captain Dean Jones, who made some crucial tackles was uncharacteristically caught out of position and this allowed striker Louis Harding some time and space and he produced a classy finish to level matters. Within two minutes the Saints went 2-1 up after an accidental collision between defenders Sion Price and Scott Mayes allowed Harding in again and he needed no second invitation as he picked his spot for another good finish past keeper Nathan Jones.

The game then took a turn for the worse when an unsavoury incident between Saints left back Reece Ashton Prowse and teenager Ifan-Sion Evans resulted in straight reds for both players.

The game deteriorated into a scrappy affair following the dismissals but St Dogmaels dominated for long periods and created several good chances with Peter Almond denied by keeper Jones and Harding hitting the woodwork.

Winger Harri Wilson was then forced off the field and potentially for a few weeks- following a heavy tackle by a Saints defender but both teams continued to push for goals, and in injury time a through ball from Llandysul debutant, Gareth Winston, put midfielder Lewis Jones through on goal only to be denied by Saints keeper Aaron Walters who managed to block the shot with his upper body and ensure his team came away with the three points.

Speaking after the game,Swallows manager Gwynfor Edwards said; “We’ve learnt a valuable lesson today, we were in full control of the game- and got caught out by a well organised, physical side- we gave ourselves too much to do- once we’d gone behind. We conceded from two mistakes- similar to the goal we conceded in mid week to Lampeter. Now the mid week games have stopped, we’ve got a chance to put these behind us, and tidy up on the training ground”

Saints stalwart Steve Williams who returns as manager in six games time having had his Central Wales Association ban reduced said that on reflection his team probably deserved to win and added:” We should have put the game to bed early in the second half as we had enough chances.

“ I was pleased with the way we defended from the front and the defence was solid throughout although Llandysul could have pinched a point at the end when Aaron made a great save but thankfully we held out.”

Felinfach were unlucky not to take a share of the spoils against Crannog for whom keeper Mike Bridges was outstanding. The Llangrannog side who also remain unbeaten were indebted to custodian Bridges after he made a series of fine saves, including one from the spot to deny the milkmen.

It was Crannog who started the better of the two teams and Robbie Evans scored after only five minutes after good work down the right flank. The game though went a bit scrappy after this with not many chances created.  Felinfach were awarded a penalty on thirty minutes for hand ball but the spot kick was well saved by keeper Michael Bridges who dived low to his left and his team led at half time. The hosts deservedly scored fifteen minutes into the second half when Owain Dafydd bravely stretched for the ball at the far post but collided with the woodwork in the process and had to go off with a leg injury.

Crannog came back strongly and went looking for a goal but were denied by a brilliant double save by Tomos James the Felinfach keeper. The visitors though were awarded a penalty with 15 minutes remaining and Rhys Davies sent the keeper the wrong way to put Crannog into the lead at 2-1 . Felinfach pressed again and were denied by keeper Michael Bridges who brilliantly tipped over a long range effort which looked goal bound and Crannog held out for a narrow win.

Jason Jones

Reigning champions Lampeter Town bounced back following an opening day defeat to secure the three points against Ffostrasol. Terry Witts and his men were undone by Llandysul first time out but they made no mistake on this occasion and were good value for their win. Front runner Jason Jones was the player who did the damage as he bagged a brace with one of these from the penalty spot and there was a goal also for Town skipper and midfielder Marc Evans.

Cardigan Town were edged out at Cae Sgwar where Ollie Edwards bagged the all important goal of the game whilst at Cae Dandre goals from Ross McDonald and Luke Davies helped steer Llanboidy to a 2-0 win over Bargod Rangers and their first points of the season.
