WRU Bowl
Cardigan 45 Bynea 10
Cardigan cruised through to the second round of the Bowl competition following an excellent all round team performance against Bynea.
The Cardi’s enjoyed an excellent run in this competition just a few years ago when they were eventually knocked out by Shane Williams and his Amman Utd team in the semi final and their young players will be hoping for a bit of luck with the draw again this time around.
Bynea came back strongly as expected and were presented with an easy chance to collect three points but they missed the target and Cardigan went back up the field and added their second try when impressive winger Dan Purnell dived over following a strong run that saw him slip past two defenders. John upgraded this with the conversion and Cardigan were in control at 14-0.
Cardigan dominated much of the second quarter but some very poor handling cost them several tries and they should have been out of sight by half time.
Full back and captain John Lumb who made a series of superb runs during the game added the fourth try when he followed up a smart chip ahead by John and the latter converted to put his team out of sight at 33-10.
Winger Geraint Williams increased the lead when he scored a super try which was started off by Lumb breaking from deep before replacement fly half Tom Dunn scored a cheeky individual try when he chipped over the oncoming defence and touched down unopposed and the conversion by centre Emyr Harries wrapped up the scoring at 45-10 in favour of Cardigan.
This showing will have delighted the Gollop Stand faithful especially in the second half when passes finally stuck and the town backs ran in for some lovely tries. Young wingers Purnell and Williams in particular were outstanding and the distribution and quality of pass of young fly half John was superb.
Up front Tom Taylor enjoyed a fine game as did experienced second row Dan Evans and number eight Davies in what was a decent all round display from the pack.
