CHARITY FOOTBALL
Maesglas Old Boys 1
Wales Veterans 5
Maesglas Old Boys put up a vintage performance before they were eventually beaten 5-1 by a Wales Veterans side that scored some outstanding goals.
The large crowd in attendance for this charity match which was in aid of Cardigan Cancer Care helped to contribute over £10 000 to a most worthwhile charity that has touched many local families and continues to support families and their loved ones experiencing the trauma of Cancer.
Several players of the excellent Maesglas side of the mid eighties ran out on to the King George including the likes of John Bryson, Stuart Thomas, Peter Williams, Mike Davies, Jonathan Llewellyn and Mark Lewis, all who played in the Blues side that won back to back J Emrys Morgan Cup finals and they are still the only team ever to achieve this feat. There was also a sprinkling of players from other clubs including former Llandysul midfielder Andrew Gordon, Tommy Lovell of Lampeter FC, James Walters of St Dogmaels FC and Justin Evans of Cardigan FC who scored the only goal for his team
The Wales Veterans who had recently beaten England Veterans by the same margin just a few weeks ago played some lovely football and three of their goals were exceptional and it was quite apparent that most of them still play football quite regularly in contrast to many in the opposing team! Some in the Blues ranks were not far off pensionable age but they had the guts to pull the shirt on one again and proved that ‘old soldiers never die they just fade away’!
Much needed funds were generated by raffles and generous contributions from local businesses and there was an auction at the end of the evening with the highlight being the sale of a print of John Charles by local artist Meirion Jones which fetched over £1000.
Maesglas Old Boys on behalf of Cardigan Cancer Care would like to thank everyone who contributed to the cause, all the Sponsors, Cardigan Rugby Club, Cardigan Town FC, the match day officials, the backroom staff, Cardigan Rugby Club Choir, the Memphis Belle Duo, organiser Mike Davies, Roger Davies of JJ Morris who conducted the auction and Wales Veterans for making the day possible.
