SCOTT ON WORLD TOUR

WEST WALES cyclist joins World Tour Team

Former team Wiggins cyclist Scott Davies has joined a new outfit in time for cycling’s world tour and will line up alongside the likes of British Road Race champion Mark Cavendish and current British Road Race and Time Trial Champion Steve Cummings. Davies, sponsored by award winning Newcastle Emlyn based IT company BCC IT, hails from Carmarthen and is the first rider in history to claim four consecutive under-23 men’s British time trial titles.

The South African registered squad are one of the 18 top tier teams competing within cycling’s World Tour and therefore have a guarantee invitation to all three Grand Tours in Italy, France and Spain along with many other prestigious races.

22-year-old Davies who, before joining Team Dimension Data rode for Team Wiggins, enjoyed some impressive results while racing for Team Wiggins in 2016 & 2017, including 4th overall at the u23 Giro d’Italia and 2nd at the Tour of Alsace.

Hywel Ifans, Director of BCC IT said that his company was pleased to see the local cyclist become a pro for World Tour Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka.

“We are extremely proud to see Scott sign a professional contract with a top tier world cycling team. It is truly an honour to support and see his great achievements and look forward to seeing his continued development and future races. We are pleased to support the Bicycles Change Lives campaign #BicyclesChangeLives.”

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka was founded in 2007 and became the first ever African cycling team to gain a WorldTour license, in 2016. The team has bases in South Africa, the Netherlands and Italy. It’s also known as Africa’s Team due to its focus on helping African talents to the world stage of cycling. The team races to raise funds for the Qhubeka Charity to change lives with bicycles in Africa.

Qhubeka was founded in 2005 and believes that mobilising people with bicycles can change lives through creating access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity.

In Nguni the name means “to carry on”, “to progress”, “to move forward” and uses the bicycles as a tool to create change by connecting people to schools, clinics and jobs. Communities with limited transport have restricted options, therefore, to date over 80,000 bicycles have been distributed to help people in South Africa to move forward.

Steve Mason, Sales Director of BCC IT added,

“Congratulations to Scott for starting his first World Tour at Santos Tour Down Under with World Tour Team Dimension Data last month. We’re extremely proud to sponsor our local boy for the third year in 2018. He finished his first World Tour in 23rd overall and 8th in the youth classification, whilst assisting his team mates to secure the King of the Mountains title and a 3rd overall position. He also finished highest placed Brit.”
