Central Wales Challenge Cup
Round 4.
Bow Street 2 Newcastle Emlyn 1
Missed chances including a save from the penalty spot cost Newcastle Emlyn dearly in the last sixteen of the Central Wales Cup against Bow Street.
The reds who travelled to Cae Piod in a confident mood following an impressive run of results more than matched a side who regularly play at a higher level and it was the visitors who looked the more hungry side in the opening quarter.
Jake Kelly, Dion Phillips and Adrian Hazelby all had decent chances in this period but both teams did well to play some quality football on a pitch that had been hit hard by the heavy rain. However the Magpies slowly grew into the game and they took the lead against the run of play when Tom Williams scrambled the ball home from a corner
The visitors though kept their composure and reacted positively and with a couple minutes to go before half time they nailed the equaliser when Sam Skinner was sharper than anyone else in the penalty box and fired home to make it 1-1 at the break.
There was little in the game after the interval but the biggest turning point of the game arrived when Emlyn raider Cory Davies was upended on the hour and the normally reliable Huw Jonah Jones was entrusted with the spot kick. A goal could well have seen his side pull off the shock of the round but unfortunately for him and his team mates his strike was superbly saved by Bow Street keeper Ben Willis.
The reds enjoyed a couple of great chances after this with one effort hitting the woodwork and another again testing Willis in goal but these missed opportunities were to prove very costly as on a rare counter attack, Bow Street poached the winner when Tomos Evans coolly ran through and tucked the ball home past the Emlyn custodian and despite a late rally with the visitors pushing hard for a goal to take the tie into extra time the Magpies held on for a place in the quarter finals.
“Our boys were gutted because they knew we deserved more and it was our first defeat since our very first league game of the season back in August and I was very proud of the effort and how well we played against a good Bow Street side.
In the other games played in the fourth round of the Central Wales Cup Radnor Valley lost away at Llandrindod Wells by two goals to nil and Waterloo Rovers overcame the challenge of Dyffryn Banw following a penalty shoot out.
