BONT EDGE THRILLER

Len and Julia Newman Memorial Trophy

Bont 3 Talybont 2

Bont secured the first leg of what could be an historic hat trick after they edged out Talybont in a five goal thriller at Parc Avenue.

The Tangerines who also take on the same opposition in the final of the League Cup are also only one match away from winning the Cambrian Tyres league championship and their supporters are in for an exciting finale to the season.

Bont started brightly from the kick off, creating several decent opportunities in the first ten minutes, including a chance for Ben Lewis in the opening thirty seconds. But it was Talybont who took the lead against the run of play when a shot from Robbie Soughgate took a wicked deflection to beat keeper Owen Evans who was left stranded.

The league leaders remained positive and continued to create chances, and were eventually rewarded for their hard work when Terry Davies found space in the box and crossed in to Dewi Sion Evans who slotted home from five yards.

The second half was more of an even affair in terms of possession, but it was still Bont who were creating the better opportunies and on the hour mark, Lewis latched on to another Davies cross, and still with a lot to do, slotted home beautifully to give his team the lead.

The next ten minutes saw Talybont on the ropes but the Tangerines could not put the game to bed, and after eventually getting a foothold in the game again, with a little less than ten minutes on the clock, Talybont grabbed an equalizer thanks to a superb finish from a tight angle from Dylan Hughes.

With the game seeming to be heading for extra-time, there was time for one final opportunity from Bont, and it fell nicely to the feet of Lee Jones, who slotted home with his left foot from just outside the area to bring jubilation for his players and the many supporters who were in attendance.

The final whistle ensured Bont lifted their first piece of silverware for seven long years and it also sets up another thrilling encounter when the same teams meet in the League Cup final next Wednesday.
