Costcutter League Cup Quarter Final

Crannog gained sweet revenge for a narrow loss the previous weekend when they knocked Llandysul out of the League Cup.

The cup holders who lost 3-1 to the Swallows in a very tight contest in the J.Emrys Morgan Cup seven days earlier, managed to shade this one with a second half goal from George Colven.

This was the fifth time the two teams had locked horns this term but this game didn’t quite live up to some of the others but Crannog were nevertheless deserved winners.

They were far better in midfield on this occasion, playing the ball to feet through the likes of Rhys Davies rather than pumping it long and they bossed this area for long periods although the Swallows missed the presence of Terry Maynard and Scott Thomas who were unavailable.

Manager Chris ‘Coco’ Davies though had no gripes and said that their opponents had deserved to win and wished them good luck but he said he was disappointed that his team had created very little in front of goal.

Crannog started well and they were presented with an early chance but Colven missed the target whilst at the other end Llandysul had a couple of efforts from distance but these were comfortably saved by Rhydian Morgan in goal.

Mike Glover and Huw Reed were called upon to deal with an aerial bombardment from corners and long throws as Llandysul pushed hard but the visitors managed to soak up the pressure and midfielder Dylan Davies and Reed had good chances for Crannog but were unable to convert.

Close to halftime Crannog should have been awarded a penalty when George Colven raced through to head a bouncing ball over oncoming goal keeper Jon Durbridge but he was clattered to the ground by the custodian just inside the penalty box. Referee Nigel Edwards, showed the yellow card but gave a free kick on the edge of the box despite the protestations of the Crannog players.

Llandysul took the game to the visitors early in the second half, but without really threatening but the deadlock was eventually broken with just five minutes remaining when Colven slipped the attentions of three defenders before he tucked the ball away into the corner of the net.

Crannog should have killed the game off minutes later when from a counter attack Dylan Davies combined with his brother Rhys and Gary Davies to give Colven another chance at goal, but a last ditch challenge blocked his shot out for a corner. This was to be the last action of the game as Crannog held out for a 1-0 win and a place in the semi-finals where they will take on Cardigan Town.

Cambrian Tyres League Cup Quarter Final

Bont reached their third semi-final in as many weeks when they edged out rivals Bow Street Reserves by a single goal in the Cambrian Tyres League Cup

This eagerly awaited clash between the top two teams in the Cambrian Tyres Division 1 promised to be a decent game but unfortunately for the spectators it was a stop start affair with very few chances created.

The visitors started well and immediately put the home team under pressure, controlling the midfield and forcing a succession of corners all of which though failed to really trouble the tangerines. There was great concern midway through the half as hosts top scorer Dewi Sion Evans was carried off following an awkward fall when he challenged the visitor’s keeper and it is has not yet been confirmed as to how long the Bont dangerman will be out for.

There was very little action in the second quarter and the scores were locked at 0-0 at the break.

The same pattern continued in the second half, but the home side pressed more, but they just couldn’t find the breakthrough, Bont then lost influential midfielder Fergus Morris through injury after pulling up and the game which never really got going due to the very bobbly surface was heading into extra time when five minutes from the end Bont midfielder Lee Jones broke through and as he stormed into the penalty box he was brought down.

Up stepped experienced Andrew Carree to calmly slot away the resulting spot kick and send the home side into the semi-finals with a 1-0 success.
